The primary purpose of this position is to provide support and assistance to the Fitness Center Director by administering fitness, sports, and special events/programs.

Major Duties:

  • Administers fitness, sport programs and special events. Oversees operation of facility. Manages and operates issue counter to include customer service. Oversees general housekeeping during shift of duty within facility and immediate outside area. Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability and certification to perform basic first aid, CPR and AED.

Qualifications: Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NK-1, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-4 or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience as a group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities. Teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities. Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service. Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children). Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop. Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility. Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Have a combination of specialized experience and education totaling at least 100 percent when computed. NOTE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of sports, sports rules, fitness programs, special events, and intramural and varsity sports. 2. Knowledge of customer service practices and principles to include interaction with patrons, telephone courtesy, reservations and associated practices and principles as obtained through previous experience or in-house training sessions. 3. Ability to administer basic concepts of special programs, events and sports. 4. Knowledge of proper use and operation of electronic and mechanical fitness equipment and supplies associated with fitness and sports. 5. Knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of lifesaving and associated techniques surrounding first aid and CPR. 6. Ability to demonstrate use of cardiovascular equipment, free weights and nautilus equipment to patrons. 7. Knowledge of a variety of Fitness center rules, work procedures, equipment and materials. 8. Knowledge of basic accounting and inventory procedures and basic computer programs, i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. 9. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Additional position requirements: 1. Required to possess a government operator's permit. May be required to work at any fitness center on Robins AFB as assigned by management. 2. Incumbent may be required to work an irregular tour of duty which could include weekends, holidays and overtime. 3. Incumbent will be required to complete training courses in CPR, first aid and AED. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
