Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates (AA or AS) degree is strongly preferred.

Experience:
Required: Minimum of 1 year of work experience equivalent to a Receiving and Accessioning Technician; or equivalent combination of education and experience in related field

Preferred: Experience in a clinical testing environment

Responsibilities

Specimen Receipt and Verification:

  • Receive and log incoming specimens and samples.
  • Verify specimen information against intake documents and manifests.
  • Ensure specimens are correctly labeled and meet submission criteria.
  • Enter data and QC sample information both manually and electronically.
  • Knowledge of how to resolve sample and document discrepancies. Work with other team members to collect information as needed.
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory testing.

Accessioning:

  • Accurately enter specimen information into the laboratory documentation management solutions, LIMS or scans.
  • Assign unique accession numbers to each specimen to include labeling specimens for testing and or shipment
  • Facilitate specimens to the appropriate workflows for downstream testing.
  • Maintain required logs representing current samples in for testing

Quality Control:

  • Inspect specimens for proper collection, labeling, and packaging.
  • Identify and document any discrepancies or issues with specimens.
  • Communicate with program management or client services to resolve specimen-related issues.
  • Perform quality checks on all deliverables to customers.  Partner with other employees to ensure a second QC check when required.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of specimen receipt and processing.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety and quality control protocols.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Communication:

  • Liaise with laboratory staff regarding specimen status and issues.
  • Assistance and support to laboratory personnel as needed.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction throughout laboratory processing
  • Primary customer contact for all laboratory tests and clinical trial testing.
  • Ensure all customer needs are met from sample delivery to final reporting and end of testing deliverables.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures in area of responsibility reflect current practice.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor and manage supplies related to specimen receiving and processing.
  • Order and restock supplies as necessary.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in training and continuing education to stay current.
  • Train other personnel as required.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives within the laboratory.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, Word, Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance, HIPAA and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of working with potentially biohazardous specimens
  • Positive can-do attitude and the ability to be flexible in a fast-paced and evolving work environment

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in California is $19.64–$24.00.
