Engineering is responsible for performing research and analyses to develop design options for components, products, systems and processes.

Research and Development Engineering is responsible for developing and implementing new products through adherence to established design control processes and good engineering and documentation practices.

Job Summary

The Manager, R&D Engineer manages and oversees research and development projects to support the design, development, testing and refinement of products. As such, this job must understand the nature of the product/end use and must participate in all aspects of the research and development process, including idea generation, computer aided design, lab testing and coordination with legal and strategic marketing teams to bring products to market. In addition, this job participates in the business development process and must effectively leverage a team of R&D engineers to ensure workflows move effectively and efficiently in line with business objectives. As part of working in a cross-functional technical environment, this job requires coordination with sales leaders, manufacturers, business partners and vendors, worldwide to ensure project success.

This is a hybrid position location in Hazelwood, MO.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of R&D engineers and directs and prioritizes workflows to ensure timely and efficient project delivery, including execution of the performance management process.

  • Participates in business development activities and meets with clinicians and other external stakeholders to understand market needs.

  • Maintains a budget and manages research and development process for various mid and long-term projects (1.5 – 3 years) to ensure profitable investment.

  • Develops business cases and designs, builds and tests prototypes of new medical devices in line with regulatory standards and writes associated product development reports.

  • Defines specifications and oversees component manufacturing processes to ensure quality with respect to finished products.

  • Develops test protocols to conform with FDA and European standards, writes test reports and presents results.

  • Influences and works collaboratively with cross-functional teams including Marketing, sourcing, manufacturing, enterprise marketing, customer service, finance, quality, regulatory, legal, regional teams, and others.

  • Interacts with external personnel on significant cross-functional programs, often requiring coordination with vendors and suppliers outside the organization.

  • Takes informed risks and is biased toward action.

  • Supports our manufacturing partners to ensure timely resolution of issues including complaint investigation and resolution.

  • Maintains awareness of relevant standards and regulations and communicates any changes to team members.

Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of experience, preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent work experience, preferred

  • Proven leader and coach, adept at mentoring direct reports and cross-functional partners, providing technical/non-technical direction, and fostering team development through feedback and training.

  • Apply advanced knowledge to independently lead and manage complex, large-scope projects with significant, long-term impact, ensuring timely delivery and effective resource allocation.

  • Strategic and creative problem-solver with a bias for action, capable of developing policies, recommending new practices, and providing precedent-setting solutions to drive continuous improvement.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and skilled in managing multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, fostering effective collaboration across cross-functional teams and departments.

  • Monitors and reports project progress, identifies areas for improvement (systems and personnel), and provides input on project resource estimates.

  • Proactively identifies ways to expedite projects, avoid historical mistakes, and troubleshoot issues.

  • Preferred experience in medical device, healthcare, and/or other product or service management.

  • 20% domestic and international travel

Anticipated salary range: $123,400 - $150,300
