What You Will Do

Johnson Controls is seeking a hands-on R&D Engineering Intern to support the Special Hazards Fire Suppression New Product Introduction (NPI) team at our R&D Center in Marinette, WI. This internship focuses on the design, development, testing, and certification of life‑safety products within our Vehicle & Restaurant Suppression portfolio. You will work alongside experienced engineers to support mechanical design, product testing, regulatory compliance, and launch activities.

This is an on-site internship and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

How You Will Do It

  • Collaborate with engineers, program managers, and product line teams to develop world‑class fire protection solutions.
  • Translate high‑level market and customer requirements into design concepts.
  • Prepare design concept diagrams, detailed drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Analyze designs for feasibility and performance, including cost, vibration, mechanical stress, fluid flow, and heat transfer.
  • Coordinate and support prototype fabrication efforts.
  • Plan, execute, and document test programs; compile and analyze data to optimize product designs.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability principles and maintain awareness of manufacturing processes.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and industry trends in fire suppression.
  • Maintain familiarity with regulatory requirements and testing standards.
  • Prepare technical reports and present project findings to cross-functional stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Completion of sophomore year (BS) or first year of an MS program in an engineering discipline.
  • Ability to apply foundational engineering theories, mathematics, mechanics, and physical sciences.
  • Strong teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to write technical reports and communicate detailed engineering concepts.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior internship or co-op experience; strong business acumen beneficial.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic, professional, or extracurricular settings.

HIRING HOURLY RANGE:

$20.00 – $24.00/hour (Hourly rate to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
