Location & Schedule

This position works exclusively onsite at Denver International Airport in the Ramp Control Tower. While most duties will be performed from this location, operational needs may require work from other areas within the airport.

The Ramp Tower operates 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is subject to mandatory overtime based on operational need during any airport or citywide emergency, and irregular or emergency operations at DEN, including staffing shortages, severe weather, aircraft deicing operations, and snow removal operations. Shift assignments, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, will vary according to operational requirements.

The Airport Operations team at Denver International Airport (DEN) has an opening for a Ramp Tower Controller. This position will work with a team of other Controllers and the Ramp Tower Manager (RTM) in the Ramp Control Tower to manage the day-to-day operations at Denver International Airport. In this position you will work on site in the Ramp Control Tower to control the movement of aircraft in the non-movement areas, manage aircraft deicing operations, and coordinate aircraft gate parking assignments. Ramp Tower Controllers at DEN can expect to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as mandatory overtime based on operational need during any airport or citywide emergency, and irregular or emergency operations at DEN, including staffing shortages, severe weather, aircraft deicing operations, and snow removal operations.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Issues push, taxi, safety advisory and instructions to aircraft in the non-movement area via FCC licensed frequencies.
  • Instructs aircraft during low visibility conditions using point to point instructions  in the non-movement area around snow plows, snow melters and deicers.
  • Controls the movement of aircraft and serves as focal point for the safe, efficient and expeditious flow of aircraft ingress and egress within the confines of the non-movement area, based on FAA standards.
  • Assists the duty Ramp Tower Supervisor with managing, coordinating, and resolving airport emergencies, security problems, environmental issues, and other unusual events affecting airport operations.
  • Assists the duty Ramp Tower Supervisor by coordinating numerous operational, engineering, construction, maintenance, contractor, tenant, and other necessary activities in the non-movement area.
  • Identifies and coordinates corrective action for non-movement area abnormalities such as construction activities, aircraft conflicts, and aircraft emergencies.
  • Coordinates aircraft movements with the FAA Tower, airlines, deice companies, City agencies, or any other entity necessary to ensure the smooth operation of ramp tower functions.
  • Assists the duty Ramp Tower Supervisor in the coordination and execution of special movements on the airfield such as VIP visits, charter operations, air evacuations, prisoner flights, military operations, etc.
  • Assists the duty Ramp Tower Supervisor in the coordination and execution of snow removal activities on non-movement area taxiways, deice pads, and concourse gate areas.
  • Keeps current in changes to airfield layout and construction and aircraft management policies and procedures associated with the operations of the ramp tower.
  • Works with and operates specialized hardware and software including networked information display systems, video cameras, aircraft monitoring systems, gate management systems, and sophisticated radio and communications systems to safely coordinate, communicate, monitor, and control aircraft movement.
  • Collaborates with DEN Sections and Divisions, as well as external stakeholders to identify and resolve issues that arise during day-to-day operations.
  • Contributes to the Ramp Tower team through participation in team meetings, work on additional projects, and involvement in problem-solving on issues that impact the Ramp Tower and Airport Operations.
  • Assists the Incident Commander for all airport emergencies such as aircraft alerts, snow emergencies, severe weather, irregular operations (IROPS), and security breaches, as needed.
  • Proactively identifies hazardous conditions or situations on and around the non-movement area. Ensures timely reporting of hazards through the established identification and tracking systems. Provides guidance and suggestions for mitigation and assists in implementation of mitigation where appropriate.
  • Assists in the orientation of new incumbents to the classification and performs on the job training demonstrating the classification’s duties. Documents daily evaluations and communicates performance of the trainee to appropriate management.
  • Keeps current on all ongoing changes to federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations relating to the position, Airport Security Program and TSA security directives. Maintains proficiency by passing regularly scheduled examinations.
  • Serves as Controller-In-Charge (CIC) as required when a duty Ramp Tower Supervisor is not present in the Ramp Tower.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a City-wide emergency declared by the mayor.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Knowledge of FAA regulations, airport operations, and aircraft types
  • Knowledge of airport runways, taxiways, terminal, vehicle service roads, emergency response roads (airside and landside), tunnels/baggage areas, train system and access points, gates areas, hangars, and other facilities within the airport sufficient to be able to assist in the management of operations and emergency events.
  • Knowledge of safety and security practices sufficient to be able to coordinate and provide security.
  • Skill in the simultaneous use of networked information display systems, video cameras, aircraft monitoring systems, gate management systems, several radios, and other electronic devices sufficient to be able to provide and receive information from airport, FAA, airline, and other personnel to ensure the safe, efficient movement and parking of aircraft.
  • A reliable and dependable team member with excellent attendance and a positive outlook with a willingness to learn and provide exceptional service to our customers
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent time management and decision-making skills
  • Desire for continuous process improvement with the ability to take direction and work as part of a team to achieve a common goal

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement:    Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement:    Four (4) years of experience of the type and at the level of Aviation Operations Representative or equivalent in an aviation environment.
  • Education and Experience Equivalency:    A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
  • License/Certification Requirement:    By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. 
  • License must be kept current as a condition of employment.
