The Opportunity:

As a Radiochemical Intern for the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR) in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPPS) in Richland, WA, you will support ongoing radiochemical research, analytical activities, and laboratory operations. You will assist with radiochemical sample analyses for actinide elements, including sample preparation and actinide separations, and will support the improvement and development of USTUR’s analytical protocols. You will receive additional training and experience to perform independent radiochemical analyses of actinide elements and to conduct research focused on improvement of existing analytical methods and developing new protocols for actinide analyses in various sample types.

    Additional Information:

    This is a full-time (100% FTE), temporary, overtime eligible position.

    Project End Date: This is a project position and is expected to end one year from date of hire. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension to complete the project.

      Monthly Salary: $3,925 to $5,271 | Range 44 (Steps A-M) | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

      In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

      Required Qualifications:

      • Completion of an approved course* for laboratory assistants OR two years of chemical, or clinical or public health laboratory experience.

      • Training in medical technology OR education in college with courses in laboratory sciences may be substituted, year for year, for experience. *Course approved by American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

      • College laboratory science coursework in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, or closely related subject field may be substituted, year for year, for experience. 

      • Certification from WSU Radiation Safety Office or completion of training within two weeks of hire.

      • Completion of training in blood-borne pathogens within two weeks of hire.

      • Completion of WSU required training on the schedule specified by WSU.

      • Completion of CITI and other ethics training required by IRB within two weeks of hire.

      • Completion of Hazard Communication training within two weeks of hire, or at first available opportunity.

      • Completion of any other applicable training as assigned.

      • Travel to US Nuclear Defense Facility may occasionally be required.

      • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • College laboratory science coursework in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, or closely related subject field at the 200 level or higher.

      • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, or a closely related field.

      • Experience in radiochemistry and/or academic or professional experience in a research laboratory.

      • Demonstrated experience with wet chemistry techniques.

      • Familiarity with acid digestion, drying/ashing, or electrodeposition techniques.
