The Opportunity:

As a Radiation Health Physicist 1, you will work within the Research Safety Program team to support WSU research and teaching with radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines. The Radiation Safety Program team maintains the Washington State Broadscope license and the Radiation Air Emission license for radioactive materials and business licenses for radiation producing machines and x-rays. These licenses are required for the operation of numerous research and teaching programs, including the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Research Reactor, and several research producing departments across four WSU campuses and several extension locations.

Working under supervision and guidance with the University Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and other team members, this position is responsible for supporting numerous functions to promote healthy, safe, and secure research, including: reviewing, evaluating, and approving safety standards, implementing ALARA principles, facility standards, training requirements, laboratory surveys and inspections, personnel dosimetry and bioassays, waste collection and disposal, radioactive material inventory control, radiation instrument registrations/calibrations, sealed sources and radiation-producing machines leak testing, shipping and receiving, and other functions of research safety.

This position will advise radiation safety programs and assist with training faculty, staff, and students concerning compliance with radiation control regulations and conditions of WSU’s license to use radioactive materials. This position works directly with the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) to ensure that all research safety policies and procedures are effective. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to cross train and support other areas of research safety.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible.

Monthly Salary:

$6,259.00 to $8,415.00 | Range 63 (Step A-M) | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics or closely related field. OR a Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, engineering or biological science and two years’ experience in the use of radiation. A Master’s degree in any of the above fields may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.

  • Ability to drive a variety of standard University-owned vehicles.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of radiation safety, physical science, engineering, or biological science.

  • Experience performing laboratory research and writing/revising laboratory standard operating procedures.

  • Demonstrated excellence in communications, computer skills, and personal interactions.

  • Experience interpreting and applying regulations, policies, and procedures.
