Position Title

QA Specialist – Japan (Japanese to English)

Role Summary

As a QA Specialist you will be responsible for the linguistic and technical quality of English subtitles for Japanese content on major entertainment platforms. You will work closely with internal and external translators, project managers, and global teams to ensure that our deliverables meet the highest standards of accuracy, cultural relevance, and client specifications and expectations. The QA Specialist will report to the Lead Linguist.

What You’ll Do:

  • Review subtitles translated from Japanese to English for accuracy, tone, and consistency

  • Check grammar, spelling, punctuation, and creative intent to ensure the best viewer experience

  • Identify linguistic and technical issues, escalate when there is any doubt, and follow through until resolved

  • Research ambiguities and apply linguistic judgment with logical rationale

  • Manage and communicate with our freelance translators/linguists

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to meet tight production timelines

  • Help improve internal QA processes and contribute to best-practice documentation

What You Bring:

  • Strong background in localization, preferably entertainment, with experience in subtitling and/or dubbing

  • Deep understanding of Japanese culture, nuance, humor, and context for accurate adaptation

  • Excellent Japanese and English skills, both written and spoken

  • Willingness to learn and test new tools — experience with subtitling or translation software is a plus

  • Highly organized, diligent, and detail-oriented, with a focus on accuracy

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in ambiguous situations

  • Thrives in fast-paced environments with strict deadlines

  • Collaborative mindset and proactive communication skills, a team player

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership and accountability of assigned tasks

  • Legally able to work in Japan
