Beijing Full time

Would you like to support food science researchers in publishing pioneering research that addresses some of the most critical challenges facing humanity today?

Do you thrive on building trusted relationships that lead to successful, long-term partnerships?

About the Team

You will join our global Applied Biosciences journals team, with Publishers based in the UK, the Netherlands, and China. Together, we manage a broad and prestigious portfolio of journals that provide a trusted platform for researchers to share groundbreaking discoveries, advance science, and contribute to solutions for a better world.

The team is responsible for developing and managing established titles, launching new journals, and building and maintaining society partnerships to ensure sustainable growth and high levels of customer satisfaction. We work closely with authors, editors, researchers, universities and societies across the Life Sciences ecosystem.

About the Role

As a Publisher, you will take ownership of the strategic development and performance of an international portfolio—currently eleven proprietary journals—across food science and technology. In this role, you will drive innovation and sustainable growth through portfolio strategy, proactive outreach, and close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

You bring a strong data-driven mindset, commercial and entrepreneurial acumen, and a clear interest in developments in the publishing industry. You have a proven ability to build and manage international relationships, and you are confident operating independently while contributing to broader team and cross-functional initiatives.

This position can be based in any of Elsevier’s main journal offices in China (Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen). You will report to the Publishing Director based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Responsibilities

  • Portfolio development: deliver against portfolio objectives, including content growth, market share, citation performance, impact metrics, editorial speed, and author and editor satisfaction. Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver improved and innovative journal solutions.

  • Editorial Contracts & Budget Management: Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors. Manage the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.

  • Relationship building: Build and maintain strong trust-based internal and external global stakeholder networks (incl. editors, researchers and societies) to support portfolio development and performance. Represent Elsevier in the scientific community.

  • Market awareness: Stay up to date with market developments, identify market needs and business opportunities.

  • Portfolio strategy: Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop and execute a portfolio strategy to drive sustainable growth, including new launches

  • Teamwork & Projects: Work closely with team members and other publishing colleagues to help deliver on collaborative projects and goals, to improve our services or products or make STMJ a better place to work.

Requirements

  • University degree or higher, with demonstrated experience in scientific journal publishing or a closely related role.

  • Excellent English proficiency, written and spoken, with experience working in international and cross-cultural environments.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with internal teams and external partners across the globe.

  • Relationship-building skills and market awareness, with the ability to identify and evaluate new business opportunities

  • Financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development.

  • Data-mindset: experience in data gathering, interpretation and presentation

  • Self-starter with a flexible and adaptable approach to changing priorities. Able to work equally well collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers.

  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally, both within and outside China.

We invite you to apply by sending your CV and a cover letter outlining your motivation for the role and how your skills and experience make you a strong fit.
