Position Summary:

This position promotes health and disease prevention, protects the environment by performing specialized inspections and investigations, and enforces public health laws. The work is performed under the direction of the Environmental Health & Safety Director.

Examples of Work Performed:

The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • Conducting inspections, authorizing permits, and enforcing regulations in compliance with compliance with federal, state, and local health and safety codes.  Regulated facilities may include restaurants, pools, retail grocery stores, body art facilities, farmers’ markets, lodging, schools, campgrounds, recreation/educational camps, micro markets, temporary food stands, and mobile home parks.

  • Informing and educating food service managers, employees, colleagues, property owners, body art practitioners, the medical community, pool operators, business operators, realtors, pet owners, elected officials, well and septic installers, non-profit organizations, students, and teachers through group presentations and one-on-one consultations.

  • Initiating and leading work teams for developing goals, objectives, and activities; assessing and evaluating program outcomes and data for effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Promoting best practices within the organization by bringing forth new knowledge from current research and conferences.

  • Leading and assisting in policy or procedure development and program planning.

  • Collecting samples include water, beach, pool, food, sewage, lead, stool, vector specimens, soil, and air. Transporting samples for analysis and interpreting the results for potential health risks. Determining appropriate health responses and notifies parties involved.

  • Performing water system inspections, documentation, and enforcement for DNR compliance.

  • Inspecting and investigating childhood lead poisoning, issuing orders, and providing enforcement.

  • Participating in the establishment of professional development goals that are supportive of broader County goals.

  • Maintaining a regular and predictable attendance and working extra hours and weekends as required.

  • Performing related work as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an approved college/university in Environmental Health or physical or biological sciences. Current Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian or National Environmental Health Association Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian certification preferred. A selected candidate without Specialist/Sanitarian certification will be required to obtain the Registered Sanitarian certification when National Environmental Health Association requirements related to work experience are met.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • A driver’s license and a driving record that meets County standards and an available vehicle, or if unable either to obtain a driver’s license or if driving record does not meet County standards, the ability to obtain reliable transportation.

  • Individuals conducting Childhood Lead Hazard Investigations will require certification as a Lead Hazard Investigator or Lead Risk Assessor. Individuals performing Radon Information Center activities will require certification in Radon Measurement and in Radon Mitigation.

Compensation:

Starting annual salary: $65,748.80 + Marathon County benefits
