Public Affairs Manager – India

At Svitzer, we put our stakeholders at the centre of our business and as the Public Affairs Manager, you will be responsible for driving stakeholder centricity across India. This role is primarily responsible for establishing, supporting and managing customer and government relationships, gathering market intelligence, advising the CCO on commercial opportunities, and laying the groundwork for developing new customers.

The Public Affairs Manager will contribute to the goals of the commercial function, providing in-depth analytical insight, mitigation of political and regulatory risks for Svitzer in India and other ad-hoc support to business development and commercial activity. The Public Affairs team follows political and regulatory developments and engages in dialogue with governments, authorities, industry organizations and other stakeholders on issues that could impact Svitzer's business framework conditions. Furthermore, we provide support and guidance to management and business units in engagement with government representatives or other authorities.

Specific Area of Responsibility:

Your main tasks will be:

  • Creating and developing commercial opportunities through managing relationships with existing and potential clients, partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Business development and issues management. Monitoring and mapping of public policy and regulatory issues of relevance to Svitzer businesses in India, in coordination with business leaders, prioritizing issues based on a value-at-stake approach; monitoring and reporting on developments. Act as a trusted advisor to Svitzer’s leadership, both in India, regionally and globally.

  • Advocacy. Develop advocacy strategies and execute on the same to drive business objectives and align with policies of the Indian government for Svitzer to grow and develop unique towage and marine services solutions for customers and facilitate India’s trade with the rest of the world. Produce relevant advocacy material, including background briefings, position papers, and, together with Svitzer management, contribute to the policy development in India in areas relevant to Svitzer’s business.

  • Coordinate engagement with relevant stakeholders in the central government, agencies, policy think tanks, and business associations in Delhi, India. Execution of Svitzer’s government relations and public policy activities, including engaging appropriately with relevant key government officials, business associations, coalitions, and other relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, mobilize and involve senior executives in engagement with external stakeholders when relevant and appropriate.

  • Monitor national policy developments in India, e.g., logistics, infrastructure, trade as well as other relevant issues like trade policies, geopolitics and more. Following general political and policy trends across India and the region to support business development and mitigate risks. Analyse and report on these developments when relevant for Svitzer’s prioritized regulatory issues.

  • Identify new market opportunities using data driven analysis, taking the lead on securing new contracts or extension of existing agreements for the regional organization.

  • Take a lead role driving customer centricity in Svitzer India.

Required/Preferred Education 

  • Master`s level education preferred (Business and other related courses).

Experience, competencies and requirements

  • 10+ years of experience from a role in an MNC, consultancy, government/agency or similar with public policy and government affairs in India, including a fundamental understanding of priorities and dynamics of politics in India. Public affairs experience from the rest of South Asia and/or Asia will be an advantage.

  • A master’s degree in public policy, economics, or political science, or a strong business background combined with a deep understanding of politics in India.

  • Knowledge of and experience with infrastructure, logistics/supply chain and/or transport is considered valuable.

  • A self-starter that takes the lead and owns both the process and the outcome, all the way.

  • Exemplary networking and influencing skills, able to partner effectively and form relationships with an international group of high-performing colleagues, peers, and management across APMH companies.

  • Ability to grasp and translate complex issues into a language suitable for concerned audiences in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.

  • Strong Public Affairs ethics, conducts all activities with honesty and integrity in line with company values, looks out for the best interest of the company, and fully adheres to our compliance policies.

  • Highly skilled in written and spoken English, and fluency in Hindi is considered highly beneficial.
