About the Role

You are an experienced leader and passionate about strengthening education opportunities for psychologists within public health. You will work closely with the Director of Psychology and fellow allied health/mental health leaders across SVHM to build and coordinate a psychology education program. The role will be mainly based within the Mental Health Program as that is where most of our psychologists work. Some key duties will include:

  • Establishing an early career program for provisional psychologists and Registrars.

  • Providing clinical supervision to junior and senior staff, also supporting our current Supervisors

  • Identifying the education and training needs for the SVHM Psychology workforce.


Classifications for this position will range from PM1-PM5 (Grade 4) $123,302.40 - $148,309.20 per annum, pro rata for part time).

About the Psychology Department @ SVHM

Psychology is a newly formed department and starting to strengthen its connectivity and governance footprints with new leadership roles. Psychology is one of the valued allied health disciplines at SVHM. There are approximately 50 Psychologists who provide services within the Allied Health, Mental Health, Continuing Care, and Specialist Services directorates. Our Psychology workforce includes as variety of specialities, mainly Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Neuropsychologists. Most of our Psychologists are based at the two SVHM hospitals in Fitzroy and Kew. We also have some psychologists working in North Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Hawthorn.

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will be primarily based at the main Fitzroy Campus of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) and relevant services (as required) across other SVHM sites, in particular through St Vincent’s mental health hospital and community based mental health programs. The role will work collaboratively with Allied Health and Mental Health Leads/Educators to strengthen a coordinated allied health education strategy across SVHM. Although this new leadership role will be available to all SVHM psychologists, its primary focus will be within the Mental Health directorate as that is where most of SVHM Psychologists are based. 

4.    POSITION PURPOSE

The Psychology Educator Lead position is responsible for leading, coordinating and promoting the provision of clinical education for psychologists at SVHM. Working closely with the Director of Psychology, this new position will develop a psychology education program that includes clinical supervision, education and training. This leadership role will also promote and support governance initiatives, professional standards/competencies, policy’s, and latest evidencebased care initiatives. The role will foster a culture of clinical excellence by supporting continuous improvement activities for psychologists working in public health/mental health, as well as supporting the education of the Psychology workforce skillsets to meet the SVHM mental health clinical service needs. 

POSITION DUTIES 

The Psychology Education Lead will perform the following duties:

  • Develop and implement the SVHM Psychology education program and related strategies/evaluations
  • Coordinate an early career psychology staff program for provisional psychologists on placement, Registrars completing their endorsement pathway, and for new clinical supervisors
  • Awareness of clinical supervision theories and related approaches
  • Provide direct clinical supervision to senior and junior psychologists
  • Support the Director of Psychology with implementing governance initiatives
  • Demonstrate strategies and support junior staff in the management of complex mental health needs
  • Ensure psychologists are practicing in line with the latest APHRA professional code and competencies
  • Assess and review the high impact training needs for SVHM Psychologists. Undertake problem solving to identify specific needs in staff clinical education, and develop short term and long-term strategies. Collaborate with allied health and mental health educators to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to education at SVHM. 
  • Develop continuous professional development activities for SVHM psychologists
  • Promote and maintain the values and principles that underpin best practice in relation to clinical education. 
  • Develop and sustain opportunities for interdisciplinary learning opportunities across SVHM.
  • Actively promote a culture of continuous improvement, research, innovation, and latest evidence-based practice
  • Participate in relevant committee/leadership processes, attend relevant meetings and prepare and submit reports as required.
  • Provide expert advice, reasoned recommendations and innovative solutions regarding clinical education for staff and students.
  • Strengthen strategic links with relevant academic institutions.

5.    INCUMBENT OBLIGATIONS

7.    SELECTION CRITERIA

7.1 ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Postgraduate Degree in Psychology (e.g., Masters or Doctorate)
  • AHPRA Psychology General Registration with Clinical Endorsement
  • AHPRA board approved Supervisor with extensive supervision experience
  • Minimum of 8 years relevant postgraduate clinical experience in and knowledge of psychology and clinical service provision within a health care setting

Highly Desirable:

  • Extensive healthcare leadership experience
  • Teaching & Program Evaluation experience
  • University appointment or affiliation
  • Previous involvement in research, publications, conference presentations

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Acknowledged by their professional peers as a clinical expert and / or has broad and relevant clinical experience in their area of expertise.
