As a Propulsion Engineer – Level 1 or Level 2 located in Promontory, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one.      

The Propulsion Engineer is responsible for designing solid rocket motor internal insulators for a variety of government and commercial programs.   This individual will use their engineering knowledge and insulation design processes to develop design solutions that meet technical, cost, and schedule requirements.  

This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design and assess internal insulation systems that thermally protect solid fuel rocket propulsion systems and related components

  • Provide accurate, on-time 3D models and specifications for next generation internal insulation designs

  • Participate in engineering teams associated with the design, test, and production of rocket motor internal insulators

  • Interact with development teams (including specialists in Manufacturing, Quality, Safety,  Thermal, Structural, Materials, and Test) to certify design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Engage with multi-discipline team and functions to improve internal insulation design process and tools via incorporation of test data and new innovative analysis and predictive and uncertainty quantification techniques

  • Develop and present documentation for project related briefings including design reviews to be given to internal and external customers

  • Perform problem solving/anomaly resolution and conduct special studies

  • Collect and evaluate post fire insulation performance data from full scale rocket motor tests

  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications for Level 1:

  • Bachelor’s degree in classical Engineering with 0 years of professional experience.   

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance

  • Previous internal insulation design, fabrication, inspection experience, rocket motor design, or aerospace experience

  • Willingness to learn: Chemical basics of rubber and polymer insulations and adhesives

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Ability to travel: Travel expectation of 10%

Basic Qualifications for Level 2:

  • Bachelor’s degree in classical Engineering with 2 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 0 years of professional experience.   

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance

  • Previous internal insulation design, fabrication, inspection experience, rocket motor design, or aerospace experience

  • Willingness to learn: Chemical basics of rubber and polymer insulations and adhesives

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Ability to travel: Travel expectation of 10%

 Preferred Qualifications:  

  • NX modeling and drawing experience

  • Understanding of manufacturing and inspection processes

  • Previous experience at Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards 

Primary Level Salary Range: $65,800.00 - $98,800.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $79,300.00 - $118,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
