Compensation Range

Job Summary
A highly motivated, experienced Project Manager (PM) is needed at 0.5 FTE for the Parent Health Engagement Lab at the UBC School of Nursing. The primary focus of this position will be program management with the following requirements: 1) Community Engagement with immigrant parents in the lower mainland; (2) Managing and coordinating budgets for multiple community engagement projects; (3) Facilitating Quality Improvement council meetings with stakeholders in acute care (Surrey Memorial Hospital-NICU); (4) Collaborating closely with stakeholders at S.U.C.C.E.S.S and Ronald MacDonald House.

The Project Manager will be responsible for the overall planning, management, and facilitation of community engagement initiatives, ensuring alignment with program objectives. In addition, the PM will contribute to the planning, management, and communication specific to the UBC-Rogers 5G partnership initiative. The PM will be based at the UBC School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC, with regular travel between sites in the Lower Mainland of BC, with the opportunity for occasional trips to other study sites across the country.

This 6-month position (with the possibility of extension) involves the collaboration of patients, researchers, health care providers and leaders, administrators, and community organizations.


Organizational Status
The PM will report directly to Principal Investigator, Dr. Jenny Auxier. Research staff and trainees will report directly to the PM, who will oversee the recruitment, hiring and work of the RAs and contractors. The PM will be responsible for planning, managing and handling all communications related to the research with a network of team members based across Canada, including other university researchers, policy partners, patients, and community stakeholders.

Work Performed
Strategic Project Leadership:

  • Set priorities and goals for the research program, in conjunction with Principal Investigator and Co- Investigators, namely Lived Experience Experts (immigrant parents in the region).

  • Work closely and communicate regularly with the research team members who are based at various universities, health care agencies, and government departments

  • Manage the research project(s), enacting leadership for all communication activities, exercising professional judgment and initiative.

  • Negotiate ethics protocols and relationships with community partners, specifically developing and negotiating MOUs with partners as needed

  • Develop, implement, and maintain collaborative research protocols with community partners

  • Manage ongoing communication with funding partners

  • Plan and facilitate research team meetings at academic and community sites

  • Supervise the documentation of decisions related to research analysis and data collection plans, team communications, and community relations

  • Submit and update ethics applications and monitor research ethics procedures, to be coordinated across multiple university ethics boards

  • Exercise independence and initiative in the overall coordination and management of the program of research

  • Manage the UBC research office, including the set up and maintenance of files, data tracking and storage procedures, etc. 

  • Prepare and review budgets and provide forecasting; implement cost-effective measures to optimize budget utilization

  • Proactively escalate emerging issues or challenges to Principal Investigators in a timely manner

Knowledge Translation and Exchange (KTE):

  • Develop Parent-driven content for community engagement meetings and parent peer-to-peer support sessions/events.

  • Collaborate with our knowledge users and partners in planning and implementing KTE activities and materials

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and promotion of the project website to ensure current, impactful content and maximize audience engagement

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The quality and productivity of the research project(s), performance of research staff, and research partnerships will be affected.

Supervision Received
The applicant is expected to function independently, but will work closely with and report to the Principal Investigator of the project, Dr. Jenny Auxier. Works with independence and autonomy within the scope of work performed. Work is reviewed periodically by the PI to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.

Supervision Given
The PM will be responsible for supervising the data collection and management activities conducted by the research staff and overseeing the conceptual and analytic work of the research with the research staff and team.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree in a relevant discipline is preferred

  • Lived experience expert in Mental Health promotion and prevention, as well as having a newborn admitted to the NICU.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Interest in participating in scholarly peer-reviewed publications is an asset. 

  • Experience working with community-based organizations and government agencies is an asset. 

  • Due to the complexity involved in managing a program of research in multiple sites and provinces, a PM with experience in research management, excellent administrative skills, including managing research budgets, and experience working with interdisciplinary research teams is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and team development skills. 

  • Demonstrated initiative and the willingness to work closely with members of a research team to ensure problems are resolved quickly and appropriately. Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, including members of the community, marginalized populations, health care providers, and policy makers.
