Project Engineer II/III
OVERVIEW
Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Project Engineer to join the E&I Engineering Team. The Project Engineer II/III will report to the Refining Engineering Manager and provide project management and E&I technical engineering services to support a refinery process operations team. Projects include small and mid-sized capital and expense projects needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units. Management of multiple projects concurrently is required.
Relocation is approved for this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Applies project management skills across all phases: development, justification, design, construction, and startup
Manages multiple projects/programs safely, efficiently, and within budget; develops strategies to meet schedules and mitigate delays.
Ensures compliance with Management of Change (MOC), Process Safety Information (PSI), and mechanical integrity documentation. Coordinates with external engineering consultants and designers to complete projects and studies cost-effectively.
Develops scope, cost estimates, and schedules for capital and expense projects; prepares Decision Support Packages (DSPs) and presents to leadership.
Collaborates with stakeholders including Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution. Coordinates with external consultants and internal teams to support execution.
Participates in HAZOP reviews and incident investigations; applies safety and environmental standards to designs.
Applies engineering codes and specifications; ensures designs meet safety, environmental, and permitting standards.
Promotes safety awareness and takes corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Specifying and purchasing electrical/instrument engineered material for assigned projects.
Providing E&I technical support on multi-discipline projects.
Providing E&I support, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills for refinery process operations teams.
Providing E&I assistance to the Area Teams during process unit Turnarounds.
Travel 10%
Participate in turnaround events as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum (Required) Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
Two (2) years or more of industry experience
Valid driver’s license
Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
Five (5) years or more of industry experience
Experience with process measurement and control, instrument equipment, safety instrumented system (SIS) design, electrical area classification, management of change (MOC) processes, and industry standards (NFPA, ISA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.) or experience with electrical power system design for industrial facilities.
SKILLS
Microsoft Office Suite
Experience in the use of Instrument and Electrical management software such SI (Smart Instrumentation) and ETAP.
Organizing, planning, critical thinking, and communication.
Ability to manage competing priorities in dynamic refining environment

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
1. Full In-Office: 5 days in the office per week, 8 hours per day.
2. Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day work-from-home per week, 8 hours per day.
3. 9/80 Schedule: 9 hours Monday-Thursday in the office, with every other Friday off. On working Fridays, the schedule is 8 hours.
Additional hours as needed for turnaround and outage support.
