Executing project engineering efforts in developing and designing battery energy storage systems (BESS) as well as their power electronics and controls. The tasks include maintaining existing projects and supporting the creation of automated test equipment for project deployments.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and review engineering the design of contracted energy storage projects.  This position requires someone with a valid PE license in electrical engineering to be able to validate and stamp drawings.

  • Lead the design and review of BESS, including power conversion systems (Inverters & DC/DC Converters), isolation and power transformers, medium voltage switchgear, protection and control systems, grounding, low and medium voltage ac and dc cable systems, and plant auxiliary equipment.

  • Experienced in troubleshooting of high voltage battery systems including the hardware power conversion devices such as inverters, converters, transformers and other related auxiliary systems. Perform load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and grounding studies.

  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Customers, AHJs, and others to meet the contractual commitments. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, civil, and software engineers. Play also a role as a technical consultant for more junior project engineers.

  • Develop and review electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and system layouts. Lead development of specifications, drawings and controls and protections strategies for contracted projects.

  • Participate in continuous improvement of standard processes, procedures, documentation, and tools to effectively deliver a wide range of project solutions.  Specify and select components including inverters, converters, transformers, switchgear, and protection devices.

  • Ensure that all project engineering deliverables are on schedule / on budget and communicate project status to internal and external audiences via standardized project controls systems.

  • Become the Project Engineering BESS SME and internal engineering interface. Work with other engineers pre- and post-contract award to optimize customer BESS solutions, use case reviews and commercial proposal strategies and processes.

  • Maintain project documentation and assist in creating vendor technical specifications and user instructions for optimal use of the designed BESS.

  • Provide support to Field Service Technicians when troubleshooting in field commissioning and service operations.

  • Understands and utilizes technical standards for reviews, documentation, and designs such as UL, UN, IEC, ISO, ECE and other engineering standards. Ensure compliance with national and international electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEEE, IEC).

  • Collaborate with Product Engineering to define, refine and improve BESS systems.
