Job Summary: The Program Support Assistant (OA) of the Emergency Department Service is organizationally located within the Chief of Staff's office and provides coordination of patient arid communication flow between inpatient units, Non-VA facilities, providers, and ancillary services within the Memphis VA Medical Center. The workload is highly unpredictable and the incumbent must be flexible and adaptive to remain responsive to!multiple demands made by internal and external sources.

Major Duties:

  • The Program Support Assistant (OA) works under the general supervision of the Administrative Officer within the Emergency Medicine Service. Incumbent makes decision on own initiative, knowledge and complete transactions and functions with minimum supervision/advice. Has the responsibility or indenpently planning, coordinating care coordination and operational responsibilities within the Emergency Medicine Service. Other duties include, but are not limited to: Collaborates and coordinates emergency department care with the nurses, providers, laboratory, radiology, MAA; Chief of Staff, and Medical Center Management. Serves as the point of contact for tele-radiology reports and stat values and communicates to providers. Works collaboratively with the Medica.l Center's managers, providers, and discipline specific functional area professionals and clinical leaders, as well as, Social Workers, Medical Center Leadership and Non-VA healthcare professionals and community vendors. Reads, analyzes and interprets technical and administrative directives, policies and regulations, taking action when appropriate and/or making recommendations of actions needed to accomplish requirements. Incumbent is expected to deal effectively with other clinical, administrative and professional personnel throughout the Medical Center and the community. Directly responsible for updating, maintaining, and reporting of the Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) board. Specifically, entering movement of patients from exam room to procedures and/or radiology, inpatient, etc. Knowledge of an extensive body of Public Laws, VA Regulations/Directives, policies, procedures, and operations t.hat require extensive emergency department experience to perform a wide variety of interrelated or nonstandard procedural assignments and to resolve a wide range of problems. The incumbent must be able to use initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods or researching trends and patterns to develop new methods, criteria or propose new policies. Incumbent must be able to problem solve complex issues regarding patient movements and processes, using the established guidelines. Incumbent maintains accuracy, reliability, and proficiency in processing written communications in an expeditious manner. Incumbent is frequently called upon to speak with others to discuss individual patlent movement(s), admissions, and/or discharge(s) and discuss VA Policy. The incumbent is responsible for protecting data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion and following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access code, etc. as wet out in a computer access agreement which employee signs. Work Schedule: Mon - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm. The position demands period of intense concentration and the ability to maintain control in difficult situations.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Applies the process of discovery that involves the diagnosis of a problem or issue, identification and gathering of relevant information, formulation and evaluation of alternative solutions or courses of action, and selection or recommendation of the preferred solution or course of action. Knows how social, political, organizational, and technological systems work and operates effectively within them. This includes the policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the work unit or organization.
