PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Salary to be commensurate with experience

The hiring range for this position is $24.35 - $30.43/hourly

This job announcement is scheduled to close January 11, 2026. The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. 

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act. 

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

The Water Conservation Program Specialist – Field Team position promotes and educates customers in water conservation methods through customer interactions created by enforcing watering restrictions set by the Water Management Plan, continuous flow and high-use outreach and investigations, and data synthesis to determine outreach methods best suited for the situation. This position requires a high level of customer service and the ability to interact with various customers. This exciting position provides the opportunity to create water waste and efficiency solutions for customers. This position reports to the Water Conservation Specialist - Field Team lead. This is a year-round, 29 hours per week, Variable Hour Non-Benefits Eligible position.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advocates water conservation by educating customers through outreach efforts 
  • Contacts customers, homeowner’s associations, and contractors regarding water use issues 
  • Seeks compliance of City of Aurora codes in regards to waste of water 
  • Maintains patrols of the City looking for violations and responding to complaints that have been received on water waste 
  • Engage customers utilizing AMI data to correct high-use and continuous flow events
  • Enforces watering restrictions set by the Water Management Plan of the Water Department 
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on customer interactions 
  • Assists with residential irrigation and soil inspections 
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education: 

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience: 

  • Basic/Intermediate computer experience
  • At least (1) one year of customer service experience

Related experience that demonstrates necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and a basic understanding of computers
  • An understanding of water conservation and irrigation practices

Skills: 

  • Must exhibit strong skills in customer service, conflict management, problem-solving, attention to detail and management of multiple tasks with deadlines
  • Bilingual preferred but not required

Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain records and logs
  • Ability to maintain focus and motivation over long periods of time while working independently
  • Ability to drive for extended periods of time

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Colorado driver’s license with a good driving history

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical work depending upon the assigned function
  • Infrequently performs medium physical work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Vision to read manuals; speech and hearing to communicate with employees and citizens
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles. Vision for reading gauges and written instructions  
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals  
  • Speech communication to communicate with employees and citizens

Work Environment:

  • Works in a combination of indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to all weather conditions, noise, and dust
  • Long periods of drive time

Equipment Used:

  • Desktop computer, tablet, radio, cell phone; equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions
