Program Director - St. Francis Downtown
The Program Director holds responsibility, authority, and accountability for the overall administration and operation of the residency program in alignment with ACGME requirements and institutional policies. The Program Director ensures the program fulfills its educational mission, maintains ACGME compliance, and promotes a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous learning.
Key responsibilities include:
Compliance
- Ensure adherence to all applicable ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty-specific Program Requirements, maintaining continuous compliance with accreditation standards.
- Design and conduct the program consistent with the needs of the community, the mission(s) of the Sponsoring Institution, and the mission(s) of the program.
- Submit accurate and complete information required and requested by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME.
- Ensure compliance with Sponsoring Institution policies on employment, non-discrimination, grievances, and due process, including actions related to suspension, dismissal, or non-renewal of resident appointments.
Learning Environment
- Administer and maintain a learning environment and working environment where residents can raise concerns and report mistreatment confidentially without fear of retaliation.
- Approve or remove physicians and non-physicians as faculty members at all participating sites, removing residents from supervising interactions and/or learning environments that do not meet the standards of the program.
- Ensure a learning and working environment emphasizing excellence in patient safety, professionalism, and appreciation for the privilege of patient care.
Program Evaluation
- Maintain responsibility, authority, and accountability for program evaluation and continuous improvement.
- Appoint the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) and submit the Annual Program Evaluation (APE).
Clinical Oversight
- Maintain responsibility, authority, and accountability for supervision of residents and ensuring education occurs in a clinical learning that is safe, structured environment aligned with ACGME expectations.
- Monitor learning objectives to ensure manageable patient care responsibilities, with attention to scheduling and work intensity that impacts resident well-being.
- Define resident responsibilities for patient care, progressive responsibility, and graded supervision.
- Ensure appropriate levels of supervision are in place for all residents.
Curriculum Development
- Oversee curriculum design ensuring alignment with ACGME Core Competencies and required clinical experiences.
- Ensure a structured didactic curriculum to meet ACGME clinical training requirements.
Resident Evaluation
- Maintain responsibility, authority, and accountability for evaluation and promotion of residents including conducting semi-annual evaluations with input from the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), ensuring timely documentation of evaluations at the end of each rotation and a final verification of education.
Resident Remediation
- Monitors compliance with policies and procedures related to grievances and due process, including actions involving suspension, dismissal, or non-renewal of resident appointments.
- Oversee the development of remediation plans for residents, following institutional policies and procedures, removing residents from learning environments as needed.
Resident Recruitment
- Maintain responsibility, authority, and accountability for resident recruitment and selection processes, ensuring compliance with Sponsoring Institution policies on employment and non-discrimination.
Resident Research and Scholarship
- Foster resident participation in scholarship and ensure scholarly activity is integrated into the program.
Resident Well-Being
- Monitor and support resident well-being, including fatigue mitigation, duty hour compliance, scheduling, and fostering a positive clinical work environment.
Faculty Oversight
- Approve or remove faculty members at all participating sites and designate core faculty members.
- Ensure core faculty members have a significant role in education, administration, supervision, evaluation, and providing formative feedback to residents.
- Maintain required core faculty-to-resident ratios per ACGME standards.
