Summary of Job Duties:

Work as part of a team conducting applied research for greenhouse and horticulture industries. Major crops of interest include edible and ornamental plant species grown in containers and hydroponics. Major responsibilities include leading research activity, including experimental design, running experiments, data collection and analysis, writing research reports, caring for plants in the greenhouse, and maintaining the greenhouse. Employees must be able to lift up to 40lbs periodically as well as work in a hot and humid greenhouse environment or outdoors during summer months. Employees must be able to commit and adhere to a regular work schedule within normal business hours. Since plants require daily care, employees will also need to work some on weekends and holidays—weekend and holiday schedules will vary depending on current research projects and decided on in advance. Employees may need to travel within state and/or interact with other academics and horticulture industry professionals. Employees can expect to gain experience and develop advanced skills in greenhouse and hydroponic horticulture, conducting applied research, and scientific communication.

Employee performance is evaluated primarily on the deliverance of research and teaching outputs—specifically publishing scientific papers and course instruction—and meeting the other items under job requirements. Employees are expected to work with Dr. Dickson on these items, attend regular lab meetings, and help prioritize tasks and effectively manage time.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

BS in Horticulture or closely related field; plus 3 years of relevant professional experience

OR an MS in Horticulture or closely related field.

Basic computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, in addition to requirements of the Division.

Preferred Qualifications

MS in Horticulture or closely related field

Experience conducting research in greenhouse/controlled environment agriculture and working knowledge of statistics.
