The Panther Camp Program Assistant – Summer Counselor supports the planning, coordination, and implementation of Prairie View A&M University’s Panther Camp youth programs, running from May 25, 2026 through July 31, 2026. This 10-week program will assist in supervising campers, facilitating daily camp activities, and ensuring a safe, engaging, and structured camp environment. Program Assistant serve as mentors and leaders who help create meaningful educational and recreational experiences for youth participants while supporting the operational needs of the Panther Camp program.

The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of daily camp programming and activities. Supervise groups of youth campers during educational, recreational, and enrichment sessions.

  • Lead and facilitate structured activities such as team-building exercises, games, workshops, and campus tours. Ensure the safety, well-being, and positive experience of all campers.

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth participants. Support program logistics including activity preparation, material organization, and facility set-up.

  • Assist with camper check-in, attendance tracking, and transitions between activities. Enforce Prairie View A&M University youth program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

  • Communicate effectively with camp leadership regarding camper behavior, needs, or concerns. Maintain a positive camp environment that encourages teamwork and personal growth.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • No prior experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling or related field.

  • Experience working with youth in camps, education, mentoring, recreation, or childcare preferred.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to participate in outdoor and recreational activities.

  • At least one year of Teaching experience.

  • Experience leading youth activities or programs.

  • Education, child development, recreation, or leadership background.

Special Requirements:

  • Applicants with equivalent experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree may be considered. One year of the related experience is the equivalent of one college year. Applicants being considered for the equivalency must have four years of related experience to meet the equivalency in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree plus the minimum required years of experience. Applicants being considered for the equivalency must have a total of four years of experience.
