Product Owner

The role

As part of our Defence Delivery group, the Product owner will be a member of an integrated development team who is responsible for maximising the value of a product.  They are the primary customer advocate for the team and are responsible for connecting the business and development teams.

Further, the successful candidate will:

• Accountable for ensuring that software is developed in accordance with systems engineering inputs, and for enabling the team to deliver to project scope, budget and schedule.
• Support the software team(s) prioritization of module and component development activities, bug fixes and documentation updates by working with the development team to ensure timely completion of tasks within the budget.
• Work with systems engineering and software development stakeholders to ensure efficient execution of product development.
• Accountable for the interface between engineering functions (e.g., Safety, Cyber, Integration, Verification) to ensure successful delivery of software.
• Clarify scope inclusions and exclusions by providing insight into system-wide impacts.
• Gather and communicate requirements and actionable design (including for example, HMI and functional chains) clearly and ensure all teams are aligned on deliverables. Provide feedback to the Systems Engineering layer to ensure continuity and consistency of design.
• Providing system level technical support to Team Leads in the development of software plans.
• Review module documents including requirements, design, tests, test plans and test results - including tracing to Sub-System Specification and Sub-System Design Document, to ensure the needs of the system are satisfied.
• Support team planning (including quarterly and sprint), reviews, and retrospectives, assisting them with refining system features, technical dependences and ensuring that goals are met efficiently.
• Where applicable, align planning and evolution with global product design.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your education, skills and experience will include:

• Education: Tertiary qualifications (bachelor's degree) in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
• Experience: Experience in the field of Systems Engineering in Software intensive systems. Across the full engineering lifecycle in Requirements Management, System Architecture, Systems Integration, and/or Verification and Validation.
• Knowledge:

• Good understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
• Familiarity with complex systems (e.g., military systems) or related defence technologies is desirable.
• Familiarity of System Engineering in an ASDEFCON context is desirable.

• Technical Skills: Proficiency in using systems engineering software tools and simulation environments (e.g., DOORS, Model Based Systems Engineering tools). Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. Ability to clearly convey technical information in both written and verbal forms.
• Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.

As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance preferably to NV1 level or have the ability to gain one. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
