Product Manager, Benevity API Ecosystem

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Full Time

Meet Benevity

Benevity is the way the world does good, providing companies (and their employees) with technology to take social action on the issues they care about. Through giving, volunteering, grantmaking, employee resource groups and micro-actions, we help most of the Fortune 100 brands build better cultures and use their power for good. We’re also one of the first B Corporations in Canada, meaning we’re as committed to purpose as we are to profits. We have people working all over the world, including Canada, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and more!

We are seeking a highly strategic and proactive Product Manager to own the vision, strategy, and execution for the Benevity API Ecosystem. This individual will treat the API as the core product, focusing intensely on Developer Experience (DX), enabling internal teams ("API Factory" adoption), and positioning Benevity for an agentic future where AI and automated systems seamlessly interact with our platform.

What you’ll do:

  • API Vision & Strategy: Define the long-term roadmap for the API ecosystem, ensuring it aligns with microservices and event-driven architecture.
  • AI-Ready Optimization: Future-proof APIs for an "agentic" future by incorporating semantic labeling and machine-to-machine optimizations.
  • Market Analysis: Research emerging trends like GraphQL and API Gateways to keep the platform competitive and best-in-class.
  • Executive Alignment: Clearly articulate the business value and ROI of all major API initiatives to leadership.
  • Product Synergy: Partner with other PMs to ensure API development is prioritized to drive value across all Benevity product lines.
  • Backlog Management: Own and groom a prioritized backlog for multiple teams using frameworks (e.g., WSJF) to balance features and technical debt.
  • Agile Leadership: Lead refinement sessions to break epics into implementable stories with rigorous security and performance criteria.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Drive fast iteration of new endpoints using mock APIs and sandboxes for early validation.
  • Internal Enablement: Act as a catalyst for the "API Factory," helping other teams adopt standardized tooling and best practices.
  • DX Advocacy: Champion the Developer Experience by ensuring high-quality OpenAPI documentation, SDKs, and seamless onboarding.
  • External Communication: Communicate roadmaps, releases, and governance policies to clients, partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Risk & Dependency Mitigation: Proactively manage cross-team dependencies and technical risks within the shared API ecosystem.

What you’ll bring:

  • API Product Expertise: 5+ years of SaaS Product Management, with 3+ years dedicated to platform APIs, B2B APIs, or developer-facing products.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of API design principles, including RESTful architecture, idempotency, versioning, and cloud-native systems.
  • Agile Leadership: Proven success leading complex, multi-team Scrum or Kanban environments and facilitating high-level backlog refinement.
  • Domain Modeling: Ability to translate complex business domains (grants, financial transactions) into clean, future-proof API resource definitions.
  • Platform Governance: Hands-on experience implementing versioning strategies and deprecation policies across large, multi-team organizations.
  • Tooling Mastery: Expertise with API management platforms (Apigee, Mulesoft, AWS), Jira, and documentation standards like OpenAPI/Swagger.
  • Strategic Influence: Exceptional ability to negotiate with and influence senior stakeholders and engineering leaders without formal authority.
  • Servant Leadership: A developer-first mindset, measuring success through the adoption rates and efficiency gains of internal and external consumers.
  • Adaptability & Growth: A proactive "can-do" attitude with the flexibility to embrace evolving business needs and emerging technical challenges.
