Our Design & Research org brings together world-class designers and researchers with a unified purpose: to connect people to the news and information that matters most. We're the strategic force that transforms deep user understanding into exceptional product experiences across our entire portfolio—from The Wall Street Journal to Factiva.
Our integrated approach ensures that research insights directly shape design decisions, while design explorations reveal new research opportunities. Together, we're building coherent, accessible experiences that honor our 135-year legacy while pushing us boldly into the future. We're a globally distributed team spearheading a digital transformation at Dow Jones, newly staffed by industry leaders from Google, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and more. Through our combined expertise in design craft and research rigor, we ensure that millions of users can depend on our platforms for truth in a world full of noise.
We're seeking a Product Designer II to own complex feature areas within our products and help shape the experiences that deliver Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism to millions of users worldwide. This role is perfect for a designer ready to work independently while contributing to our broader design system and mentoring emerging talent.
As a Product Designer II, you'll own end-to-end design for sophisticated features—like entire user profile sections or complex data visualization systems—from problem definition through post-launch optimization. You'll make independent design decisions, contribute patterns to our Index Design System, and partner closely with your Product and Engineering triad to deliver measurable business outcomes. This is an opportunity to directly impact how professionals access critical information and how readers engage with world-class journalism.
You'll balance user needs with technical feasibility and business viability, creating solutions that work across different user types while maintaining the quality and consistency our users expect. Your work will set the standard for craft excellence within your feature area while contributing to the systematic improvement of our entire platform.
The Product Designer II will report to a Design Manager within the Design & Research organization.
Own complex feature design end-to-end, taking responsibility for sophisticated areas like user profiles, data tables, or subscription flows from initial problem definition through post-launch optimization. You'll monitor metrics after launch and iterate based on user feedback and data insights to ensure your features achieve their intended outcomes.
Work independently with your Triad partners (Product Manager and Engineering Lead) to navigate constraints, prioritize initiatives, and deliver solutions that balance user needs, technical feasibility, and business value. You'll lead design discussions with stakeholders and present your work to senior leadership with clear rationale rooted in design principles and user research.
Contribute to the Index Design System by identifying reusable patterns from your feature work and documenting them for broader adoption. You'll help evolve our design language based on real-world implementation experience and ensure consistency across products while knowing when to propose thoughtful modifications for specific user needs.
Mentor Product Designer I colleagues through regular feedback sessions, design pairing, and knowledge sharing. You'll model excellence by involving junior designers in portions of your work and helping them understand how to articulate design value and connect their decisions to business outcomes.
Champion user-centered design across teams by creating artifacts like journey maps that align stakeholders around user needs. You'll break down silos between teams working on adjacent features and ensure seamless experiences across organizational boundaries.
Partner with Research to ground your work in user insights, collaborating to set measurable goals and track performance against key metrics. You'll connect design decisions to outcomes like engagement and retention, using the language of business to demonstrate impact.
Push craft excellence while maintaining practicality, delivering consistently high-quality designs that demonstrate mastery of visual design, interaction patterns, and accessibility standards. You'll sweat the details others ignore—micro-interactions, loading states, error messages—knowing these moments differentiate good from exceptional.
3-5+ years of product design experience, with demonstrated ability to own complex features from conception through launch and optimization.
A portfolio showcasing end-to-end design work for complex digital products, demonstrating your ability to balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints while maintaining high craft standards.
Proven experience working in cross-functional teams, partnering effectively with product managers, engineers, researchers, and other stakeholders to deliver successful products.
Strong systems thinking with experience contributing to or working within established design systems, understanding when to leverage existing patterns versus creating new solutions.
Excellence in design tools, particularly Figma, with ability to create detailed specifications, interactive prototypes, and production-ready assets that engineering teams can easily implement.
Deep understanding of design fundamentals including typography, layout, color theory, interaction design, and accessibility standards (WCAG), with ability to articulate design decisions using established principles.
Experience with metrics and data, comfortable partnering with analytics teams to understand user behavior and measure the impact of design decisions on business outcomes.
Strong communication skills with ability to present design work to diverse audiences, from engineering teams to senior stakeholders, adapting your style and narrative to your audience.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Design, HCI, or related field.
A growth mindset with genuine curiosity about your craft and commitment to continuous learning, whether through formal training, peer collaboration, or independent study.
