About The Role

As a Product Design Engineering Intern at HP IQ, you’ll work at the intersection of creativity, engineering, and design to help develop groundbreaking devices that redefine how people interact with technology. You’ll collaborate with industrial designers, hardware engineers, and interaction designers to transform ideas into functional prototypes and production-ready components. From 3D CAD modeling to hands-on prototyping, you’ll play a key role in exploring concepts, solving complex engineering challenges, and iterating designs until they’re ready for the real world. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn from a world-class team and contribute to products that push the boundaries of what’s possible.

2026 Internship Program Dates: May/June-August/September 2026. Final dates based on student schedule.

What You Might Do

  • Collaborate with Product Design (PD) and Industrial Design (ID) teams to conceptualize, design, and build prototypes that quickly validate ideas
  • Use 3D CAD software (NX preferred) to model parts, components, and assemblies for a new consumer device
  • Create detailed 2D drawings for fabrication and work closely with vendor partners to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Design and run experiments, applying technical analysis to guide design decisions
  • Work with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, and design) to bring concepts from ideation to execution
  • Participate in design reviews, presenting work to both technical and non-technical audiences for feedback and iteration

Essential Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree (Bachelors or Masters) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Product Design Engineering
  • Experience using 3D CAD (NX preferred) to design mechanical components and assemblies
  • Passion and experience in building and prototyping
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to present to a large technical and non-technical audience

Preferred Skills

  • Experience building consumer products
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of materials and scalable manufacturing processes
  • Experience with machine tools and prototyping equipment (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, mills)
  • Experience in industrial design, human interaction design, or graphic design

Salary Range: $45-$48/per hour
