THIS POSITION IS PART TIME (20 HOURS PER WEEK)
SUMMARY: Coordinates the flow of all probate-related paperwork and files in a county court-at-law.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Attends probate hearings in order to note dates and deadlines for documents due from attorneys.
Pulls all files for cases designated and studies the case.
Makes sure applications, wills, affidavits, citations and motions comply with the Probate Code.
Mails to attorney's notices of documents due to the court and due dates of documents.
Checks all incoming files and documents filed to make sure they comply.
Inputs data regarding probate cases in computer to allow for accurate tracking of all cases.
Answers requests from attorneys and others involved in probate matters regarding status and disposition of cases.
Advises and coordinates with Court Manager regarding need to set court dates for case status reviews or show cause hearings.
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus at least one year of experience in a legal environment; or one year of education in legal assistance, criminal justice, or pre-law may be substituted for the one year of experience.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Familiarity with or ability to develop quickly familiarity with the Probate Code. Understanding of legal terminology. Ability to type accurately at a speed of at least 50 words per minute. Ability to use word processing software on personal computer. Excellent command of English language and above-average written skills. Ability to develop and maintain well-organized record-keeping systems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys and the general public.
