Union Hospital’s 10-bed ICU has a team of caregivers who provide the highest quality care for patients with complex acute and chronic health issues. Our highly trained caregivers follow an intricate care model that is rooted in evidence-based practice and is patient-centric. We focus on detailed patient assessments, patient safety, patient and family education, and carefully and thoroughly planned coordinated care with the interdisciplinary care team. By joining this team as a Patient Care Nurse Assistant, you will coordinate with fellow caregivers to create a welcoming, healing and warm environment for patients in the ICU. This is an excellent opportunity for a nursing student as this is a PRN position that offers a flexible schedule and allows for a balance between school, work and life. 

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.  

  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.  

  • Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED  

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it during your new hire period 

  • Nursing students: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire 

  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) 

Physical Requirements:

  • The position requires a considerate amount of physical work not to exceed 50 pounds.

  • Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.

  • The individual will be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment or supports, and push beds throughout the hospital.

  • The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties such as check chest tube drainage, check urine output, etc.

  • The individual must be able to quickly maneuver throughout halls, stairways and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies.

  • Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.

  • Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

  • Special Demands: Essential Sensory requirement - ability to visually assess patients and implement plan of care. Essential Technical/Motor Skill - finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination are necessary when charting, using equipment, and providing direct patient care.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
