Privacy and Compliance Counsel

Toronto, Ontario Full time

The Opportunity

This role offers a unique chance to strengthen and shape the organization’s privacy and compliance programs at a time of growing regulatory complexity and rapid technological change. As Privacy & Compliance Counsel, you will help meet a critical business need by supporting compliance across a national dental network while guiding the organization through emerging requirements in data protection, healthcare privacy, and AI governance.

With increasing focus on digital transformation and responsible data use, now is the ideal time to expand the team and add dedicated legal expertise to this space. This is an exciting opportunity for a privacy‑focused lawyer who wants to influence organizational strategy, support innovative initiatives, and help protect patient trust at scale.

Who You Are

You are a detail‑oriented, analytical lawyer who enjoys navigating complex privacy issues and turning regulations into clear, practical guidance. Strong communication and collaboration skills help you build trust across teams, and you stay adaptable in a fast‑changing legal and technology environment. You manage competing priorities with calm and clarity, bring a proactive and ethical mindset to your work, and thrive in roles that require both independent judgment and cross‑functional partnership. Above all, you’re motivated by protecting data, supporting compliant healthcare operations, and contributing to a culture of accountability and trust.

The Impact You’ll Have

Reporting to the Director, Legal Counsel & Privacy Officer, you will help strengthen Dentalcorp’s privacy and compliance programs by ensuring alignment with Canadian privacy laws, provincial health information requirements, and emerging AI regulations. Although not a people‑leader, this role works closely with teams across IT, Security, Operations, HR, and Marketing to embed strong privacy practices into new projects, systems, and vendor relationships.

Your work will directly support patient trust and operational excellence by conducting privacy impact assessments, managing regulatory obligations, and advising on privacy risks across the organization. Through effective policies, training, and guidance, you will influence key outcomes such as regulatory readiness, data protection standards, and overall compliance across Dentalcorp’s national network.

In This Role, You Will

  • Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new systems, projects, vendors, and AI‑related initiatives, ensuring risks are identified and managed effectively.

  • Support compliance with Canadian privacy laws, provincial health information statutes, and internal privacy and regulatory requirements across the organization.

  • Develop, review, and maintain privacy and compliance policies, procedures, and internal guidance to ensure consistent and practical implementation.

  • Manage privacy aspects of vendor relationships, including reviewing data processing agreements and assessing vendor compliance.

  • Support incident response activities, including breach investigations, risk assessments, notifications, and regulatory reporting.

  • Monitor and interpret changes in privacy law, health information regulation, and AI governance, and advise on their operational impact.

  • Partner with cross‑functional teams such as IT, Security, Operations, HR, and Marketing to embed privacy‑by‑design into organizational initiatives.

  • Contribute to audits, compliance reviews, and ongoing monitoring to assess the effectiveness of privacy controls.

  • Develop and deliver privacy training and awareness materials for employees and internal stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

  • J.D. or LL.B. from an accredited law school and license to practice law in Canada

  • 2–4 years of experience focused on privacy law, with strong knowledge of Canadian privacy legislation and provincial health information statutes

  • Hands‑on experience conducting privacy impact assessments (required)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal requirements into practical guidance

  • Proven ability to manage multiple matters, prioritize effectively, and work independently while knowing when to escalate

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and risk‑assessment skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams such as IT, Security, Operations, HR, and Marketing

  • High level of professionalism, judgment, and commitment to ethical decision‑making

  • Nice to have: fluency in French and English; CIPP/C or equivalent privacy certification
