The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector delivers a decisive advantage to its customers through software-defined, hardware-enabled solutions. The Test Design and Verification team in Linthicum, MD enables these hardware solutions by providing RF microwave and mixed signal architecture, design, verification, and support expertise across a wide variety electronic sensor products. Our engineers work on complex, leading edge, high reliability electronics supporting maritime, ground, airborne, and space platforms.

This role as a Principal/Sr. Principal Engineer RF Microwave Design Engineer demands a combination of hardware and software expertise, practical experience with DC, analog, digital, or RF test and measurement equipment, and a hands-on approach to troubleshooting complex electronic assemblies. Team members collaborate closely with various specialists, including test technicians, microelectronic semiconductor engineers, electronics design engineers, and RF subject matter experts. 

Typical Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting verification efforts for RF, Analog, and Digital hardware designs
  • Designing, modeling, and verifying RF, microwave, and mixed signal subsystem assemblies
  • Creating/managing automated test benches for prototype and low production rate systems
  • Developing/Optimizing customer facing software applications for hardware design support
  • Collaborating with other teams such as Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Test
  • Deriving and trading requirements with subsystem engineers and component level designers
  • Working directly with component level design peers developing custom RF integrated circuit designs to meet assembly-level requirements
  • Supporting products throughout the product life cycle

Principal Engineer RF Microwave Design Engineer Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM with 5 years’ experience, Master’s degree in STEM with 3 years’ experience, PhD degree in STEM with 0 years’ experience. An additional 4 years’ experience in lieu of degree is acceptable.
  • Hands on experience utilizing test instrumentation such as power supplies, network analyzers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, high speed digital IO, etc.
  • Experience in text-based programming (e.g. C /C++/C#)
  • Productive in a team working environment
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Active Secret Clearance

Sr. Principal Engineer RF Microwave Design Engineer Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM with 8 years’ experience, Master’s degree in STEM with 6 years’ experience, PhD degree in STEM with 4 years’ experience. An additional 4 years’ experience in lieu of degree is acceptable.
  • Hands on experience utilizing test instrumentation such as power supplies, network analyzers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, high speed digital IO, etc.
  • Experience in text-based programming (e.g. C /C++/C#)
  • Productive in a team working environment
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Active Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Test design and integration background, with proficiency in utilizing test instrumentation (particularly instrumentation from National Instruments or Keysight)
  • Proficiency in text-based programming (e.g. C/C++/C#) and computing tools such as MATLab
  • Working knowledge of RF concepts and measurements such as S-parameters, Noise Figure, TOI, and compression.
  • Experience developing automated test equipment (ATE) at the wafer and packaged level
  • Verilog or VHDL experience for supporting Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical hardware
  • Ability to multi-task and work with minimal direction and guidance

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 - $203,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
