Principal Technical Engineering Program Manager

Reliability Engineering, HPE Networking

Location (HYBRID): Roseville, CA

Join HPE Networking as a Technical Engineering Program Manager and play a critical role in protecting product quality and customer trust. You’ll report directly to the Head of Reliability Engineering and own the end-to-end program management of hardware reliability escalations, and other reliability concerns—partnering with sales/field teams, R&D lab architects, design engineers and failure analysis engineers to drive issues to root cause, corrective action, and closure.

This is not a people leader role, it is an individual contributor role.

What you’ll own
• Program manage customer escalations and product reliability investigations focused on hardware failures, ensuring timely, accountable resolutions.

• Coordinate cross-functional teams (field, sales, lab, design, QA) to define hypotheses, organize test plans, prioritize actions, and verify corrective measures.

• Translate complex engineering analysis into clear status updates and recovery plans for customers, field teams, and senior executives.

• Track escalation metrics, maintain program documentation, and close the loop with lessons learned and process improvements.
 

What we’re looking for
• Strong background in hardware engineering with hands-on experience in reliability and sustaining engineering.
• Proven technical program management skills—able to scope, prioritize, and drive complex, cross-disciplinary projects to completion.
• Familiarity with Networking products, development lifecycles, components/materials, and quality best practices and terminology.
• Exceptional communicator comfortable presenting to customers and executives and converting technical dialog into actionable plans.
• Detail-oriented, decisive, and experienced in root cause analysis, corrective/preventive actions, and driving continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Manages and leads a program involving one or more functions and project teams to drive the engineering development and implementation process for a subsystem or component of a product or service offering.

Develops schedules, critical deliverables, budget, resource allocation plan, and other support requirements for assigned program.

Coordinates activities of supporting project teams and internal and external development partners; tracks progress against established plan and makes decisions to alter or update schedule and resource allocation to meet product requirements and development schedule.

Communicates program progress, escalations, and issue analysis to product stakeholders; collaborates with management and internal manufacturing and development partners to implement changes to product, process, or program plan to resolve escalated issues, produce solutions, and ensure adherence to budgets and established product roadmaps and schedules.

Leads and provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced staff members.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Lead technical program management initiatives focused on hardware reliability.

  • Analyze field quality metrics, including Annualized Failure Rate (AFR), to identify negative product trends and prioritize investigations.

  • Partner with R&D lab architects and design teams to assess hardware failure modes, drive root-cause analysis, and ensure timely corrective actions.

  • Apply strong knowledge of networking products, development lifecycles, components, materials, and industry quality standards.

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, including executive leadership, providing clear updates on status, action plans, and resolution of product quality issues.

  • Translate complex engineering discussions into structured, executable action plans and drive them through completion.

  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., TAC) and external repair partners to improve processes and ensure field and repair data are accurate, consistent, and actionable.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 10 years of technical program management experience

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional reliability investigations

  • Using project planning tools and software packages to create, manage, and track project results.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and directing matrixed teams and resources.

  • Ability to create and manage program schedules, budgets, and resource allocation plans.

  • Ability to effectively communicate program plans, proposals, and results, and negotiate options at management levels.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English and local language.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
