Principal Research Engineer – Metrology and Sensors

Job Description

Renishaw’s Engineering Technology Centre (ETC) is responsible for the early stage research and development of boundary-pushing concepts, systems, solutions, and products.

We are a small team of highly creative, multidisciplinary individuals looking to recruit a new team member to take on a lead role in the research and development of new technologies

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in the metrology characterisation of novel non‑contact sensor systems.

  • Act as the technical consultant for the design, development and debugging of metrology software within the group

  • Drive technical ideation, evaluating new approaches and leading the development of future technology demonstrators.

  • Generate, document, and protect intellectual property through invention disclosures and patent contributions.

  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to raising technical standards within the ETC.

Key requirements

  • Strong knowledge of optics, including lenses, interferometry, and related optical systems.

  • Proven ability to design, build, and use complex optical laboratory setups.

  • Strong software development skills, with the ability to develop, debug, and maintain technical codebases.

  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to clearly document and communicate technical work.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience developing mathematical models and data analysis tools using languages such as MATLAB or Python.

  • Experience developing software for embedded or microprocessor‑based systems.

  • Experience analysing experimental data to evaluate and communicate system performance.

  • Experience working with or developing image processing algorithms.

  • CAD experience for the design of experimental rigs or prototype hardware.

Person specification

This role suits an experienced engineer with a strong background in metrology who enjoys technical ownership and exploration. You will be technically confident, curious, and able to work with a high degree of autonomy. You should be comfortable proposing and independently investigating new concepts, be highly capable hands‑on, and able to translate ideas into working experimental systems in short timescales. Strong judgement and clear technical communication are essential.
