The Principal IT Architect is a technology and architecture leader with broad knowledge of systems, services, software architectural concepts and system integration patterns. In this role, the Architect, is a member of the Clinical Research Group, aligned to the Medical Communications business unit. The Architect is responsible for understanding the business goals, requirements and objectives; and aligning these objectives to the Group IT strategy.
The Principal Architect works with BU Technical Operations, Business Operations, and Thermo Fisher Salesforce Center of Excellence (CoE) to identify innovative digital solutions that meet customer needs with scalable and extensible architectures. This role will drive the conceptualization, design, and provide mentorship for the development and implementation of the technologies and solutions, partnering closely with the business leadership team to build and fulfill the product roadmap. The Principal Architect will own the design of multiple applications and high data volume business platforms ensuring systems integrate efficiently and scale across clients.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with BU IT leadership and business partners in technical strategy-setting sessions.
Configure and maintain a Salesforce Org to support Medical Communication Business Processes, including objects, fields, workflows, reports, dashboards, and security settings.
Actively lead the technical vision, in alignment with the BU strategy.
Drive definition and refresh of multi-year technology roadmaps.
Challenges self, team and peers regarding currently held technical / operational views in-line with digital strategy.
Stays up-to-date on the latest business systems technology and industry trends related to technical solutions, and applies them, as appropriate, to the assigned applications.
Understand the strategic business direction to find opportunities for technology innovation.
Lead discussions to deliver architectural decisions and tradeoffs, with the perspective of internal and external customers.
Analyze and synthesize architecture diagrams to uncover potential operational gaps.
Self-motivated and works effectively in a fast-paced environment, solving complex problems.
Act as trusted advisor for infrastructure technology to BU IT leadership staff.
Qualifications:
5+ years working experience working with business executives.
5+ years minimum working in the Pharmaceuticals or Life Sciences industry (required); Clinical trial, Medical Information, and/or REMS experience (preferred).
Bachelor's Degree in the field of information technology, engineering, computer science and / or business administration (required). Advanced degree in business or technology, such as an MBA (preferred).
Proven ability to lead end-to-end Salesforce architecture across complex, enterprise-scale implementations, including data models, integrations, security, and governance.
Salesforce Certified Administrator; experience with Salesforce Health Cloud and/or Life Sciences Cloud
Extensive knowledge in building solutions using Cloud Architectures and Services (AWS and / or Azure preferred).
Familiarity with various platform features like Apex Programming Language, Lightning Components, Lightning App Builder, LWC, JavaScript, Flows etc.
End-to-end knowledge of Agile Methodology and familiarity with tools like JIRA, Azure DevOps etc
Deep expertise in Salesforce integration patterns and APIs, including experience integrating Salesforce with external enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, data warehouses, clinical, or regulatory systems).
Strong knowledge of Salesforce security, compliance, and data privacy requirements, including experience supporting regulated Life Sciences environments (e.g., GxP, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11).
Proven ability to lead architectural discussions and influence decisions.
Strong experience in identifying architecture patterns for re-usability and compliance to standards.
Build positive relationships internally and externally; excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills.
Must have experience leading a matrix team of specialists and communicating with all levels of management.
Ability to partner with all levels of the organization, both technical and non-technical.
Experience working in Validated / GxP environments (required).
