About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a principal engineer.


In this role, you will:

  • Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
  • Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
  • Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
  • Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
  • Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
  • Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership


Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education


Desired Qualifications:

  • Platform Ownership & Stewardship

  • Own the end‑to‑end health, stability, scalability, and resiliency of the Apigee Gateway platform across environments.
  • Anticipate and proactively address platform risks related to capacity, performance, security, and availability.
  • Ensure platform readiness for new consumers, migrations, and emerging workloads, including AI‑driven and high‑throughput use cases.
  • Technical Leadership Beyond L2

  • Provide senior‑level technical leadership for complex Apigee L2/L3 issues while driving long‑term corrective and preventive solutions.
  • Transition the operating model from reactive issue resolution to proactive platform engineering.
  • Reduce single‑point dependencies through design, automation, and knowledge sharing.
  • Cross‑Team & Cross‑LOB Collaboration

  • Act as a single‑threaded owner for Apigee Gateway–related discussions across lines of business and regions.
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, SRE, infrastructure, security, and AI platform teams to ensure alignment and execution.
  • Represent the API Gateway platform in cross‑organizational forums, reviews, and escalation paths.
  • Standards, Guardrails & Engineering Excellence

  • Define, document, and enforce platform standards, patterns, and best practices for Apigee usage.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of security, traffic management, and non‑functional requirements.
  • Influence design and architecture reviews with a platform‑first and future‑ready mindset.
  • AI Enablement & Platform Readiness

  • Enable the Apigee platform to support AI‑driven integrations, services, and workloads through appropriate API design, security, and governance.
  • Partner with AI/ML platform teams to ensure APIs are optimized for AI consumption patterns (e.g., latency, throughput, observability, cost controls).
  • Apply AI‑assisted tools and techniques (e.g., AI‑driven observability, diagnostics, automation, or developer productivity tools) to improve platform reliability and efficiency.
  • Provide guidance on secure exposure and consumption of AI services via APIs, including policy enforcement and risk considerations.
  • Creativity, Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Apply original thinking to simplify complexity, reduce operational toil, and improve developer and operator experience.
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities across monitoring, diagnostics, deployment, and validation.
  • Challenge inefficient processes and legacy assumptions with scalable, forward‑looking alternatives.
  • Coaching, Mentoring & Capability Building

  • Mentor engineers and technical leads toward stronger platform and systems‑level thinking.
  • Coach teams on Apigee internals, debugging techniques, API design, and emerging patterns (including AI‑related use cases).
  • Ensure recurring issues, workarounds, and learnings are documented and broadly shared.
  • Risk Management & Escalation

  • Proactively identify cross‑team dependencies, constraints, and risks that could impact delivery or platform stability.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate escalation with clear mitigation plans.
  • Drive transparency and predictability in platform‑level communication.
  • 6+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Deep hands‑on experience with API Gateway technologies, with strong expertise in Apigee (Hybrid & OPDK).
  • Experience operating and scaling enterprise platforms in complex, regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of API lifecycle management, security policies, traffic management, and non‑functional requirements.
  • Working knowledge of AI/ML platforms, AI‑enabled services, or AI‑assisted engineering tools, with experience supporting or integrating such capabilities via APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience working in large, matrixed organizations with global teams.


Job Expectations:

  • Experience enabling API platforms for AI‑driven workloads or integrations.
  • Familiarity with AI‑assisted observability, automation, or developer productivity tools.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers or acting in a recognized technical leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of SRE practices, observability, and automation frameworks.
