As Principal Engineer for AI & Automation, you'll partner with the Senior Manager, AI & Automation to define and execute the technical vision for ensuring our legal products are robust, performant, and resilient at scale.

About the Role

As Principal Engineer, AI & Automation, you will:

  • Lead cross-product initiatives that modernize software delivery pipelines through advanced automation and continuous verification

  • Architect and implement observability frameworks (monitoring, logging, tracing) to proactively detect and resolve issues across distributed systems

  • Establish a technical maturity model for continuous integration, test automation, deployment, and observability across diverse legal products

  • Design frameworks that leverage AI for change-risk analysis, predictive failure detection, and automated remediation

  • Implement risk-based deployment governance frameworks using automation and AI-driven insights to determine production readiness and rollback triggers

  • Mentor and guide a global team of site reliability engineers, DevOps specialists, and platform engineers

  • Establish patterns for AI-driven tooling and automation to reduce toil, enhance system resilience, and boost productivity

  • Exercise autonomy in decision-making and managing technical risk

  • Partner with engineering, product, and service management leaders to align automation initiatives with business priorities

  • Initiate and direct modernization efforts targeting high-volume, legacy applications with significant manual operational footprints

  • Design automation frameworks that provide SREs with advanced triage capabilities to decrease service restoration times

  • Define and implement automation blueprints that embed quality, security, and compliance controls directly into CI/CD workflows

  • Establish enterprise metrics that quantify automation coverage, deployment lead time, mean time to recovery, and change failure rate

  • Lead cross-functional efforts to standardize infrastructure-as-code, test automation, and continuous delivery patterns

  • Identify opportunities where automation and AI can materially improve delivery speed, quality, and cost efficiency

About You

You're a fit for the role of Principal Engineer, AI & Automation if you have:

  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, site reliability engineering, or DevOps roles

  • Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures (AWS, Azure, or GCP), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation)

  • Strong background in monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)

  • Experience with incident management, service-level objectives (SLOs), and reliability-focused KPIs

  • Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure, including model deployment, performance monitoring, and scaling

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, Bash, Go, or similar)

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across engineering and operations teams

  • Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives and drive continuous improvement in fast-paced environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in the architecture and development of enterprise-grade frameworks and consumable APIs

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • Experience with chaos engineering, load testing, and performance tuning

  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement risk-based controls for automated delivery pipelines and production operations

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $154,000 - $286,000. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
