The role of the Principal Electrical Engineer is to assess issues as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), and drive RCCA and implementation of design fixes.  

This role will require the successful candidate to have a strong foundation in root cause analysis skills, and ability to work across multiple departments to resolve issues. In addition to these core skills, the successful candidate will be seen as a SME in electrical aspects of the aircraft seating field to include software integration and be able to resolve in-service issues the department is experiencing, as well as articulating internally and externally in-service issues the department is experiencing. This individual must be able to streamline processes for identification of in-service issues and utilize problem solving skills that combat difficult to often complex issues; typically impact multiple departments or specialties.

Responsible for overseeing electrical engineering processes and procedures to ensure the impact on customers and sustaining efforts is adequately captured and accounted for. Acts as the representative of Product Support for Engineering in all aspects of ESI and Actuation issues across all platforms.

What You Will Do:

  • Hands-on experience working with communication protocols such as CAN Bus and RS‑485, including configuration, diagnostics, and data analysis.
  • Proven track record of troubleshooting electromechanical systems, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electronics, including circuits, sensors, and basic electrical measurements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel onsite as needed to perform in‑person troubleshooting for failures reported on aircraft or related systems.
  • Proven track record of troubleshooting electromechanical systems, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electronics, including circuits, sensors, and basic electrical measurements.
  • New program support – Design and test reviews to ensure in service lesson learned are incorporated – highly involved in reliability testing and development/modification testing as necessary.
  • Attend design reviews with OE engineering. Provide recommendations based on quantitative analysis to support product reliability, maintainability, manufacturing, safety, and cost targets. Utilize risk-based tools, methods where applicable (FMEA, Risk Register, Monte Carlo Simulations)
  • Responsible for root cause analysis and corrective actions for in-service issues. 
  • Supports Non-Advocate Reviews (NAR) for seating design teams and across Interiors. 
  • Manages technical products aligned with ESI and actuation – to include JIRA tracking and management, internal design support, and continuous improvement efforts. This includes 3rd party devices and systems.
  • Compiles technical data, generates reports and presents findings to cross functional teams. Troubleshoots technical problems and issues and recommends actions to company or customer representatives.
  • Coordinates, prioritizes and resolves issues encountered by experienced team/multiple teams across multiple geographic locations.
  • Determines how to solve complex escalated issues that would impact the business and provides recommendations for solutions to leadership.
  • Ability to influence parties within and outside of the job function at an operational level regarding policies, procedures, and practices. 
  • Up to 25% travel, based on business needs. 

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in electrical technical/product knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electrical Engineer, 10 plus years’ experience in Electrical System integration and Actuation.
  • Hands-on experience working with electromechanical components, including assembly, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and apply mechanical drawings, engineering schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, including tolerance analysis, material selection, and basic CAD model interpretation.
  • Expertise in designing, simulating, and implementing complex electrical systems and circuits.  Experience working with microcontrollers, decentralized serial communication protocols (CAN), PCBs, and integration into mechanical systems.
  • Team player, with excellent problem solving, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Well versed in navigating Collins Aerospace matrix and interweaving functions and coordinating with stakeholders to drive results. 
  • Knowledge in root cause analysis and field investigations 
  • Advanced knowledge of Teamcenter PLM, NX CAD, Jira, mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes.  Must have Experience with Altium 3D PCB design tool
  • Knowledge of aircraft seating and certification requirements. 
  • Knowledge of aerospace materials 
  • RCCA tools (5-why, Fishbone Diagram, Six Sigma, FMEA, DOE)
  • Experienced with signal processing, communications.

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
