Joining Collins Aerospace isn’t just about finding a job; it’s about embarking on a journey to redefine the future of aerospace technology.

Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defense industry. Collins Aerospace has the capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market.

We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to assume a key role within the Applied Research & Technology Department in Mission Systems. In this role, you will drive innovative, mission-critical solutions that empower defense customers with cutting-edge technology. Our team thrives on creativity, tackling complex challenges head-on, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible — all to deliver the most effective, resilient, and secure solutions for the Warfighter.

As a Principal Electrical Engineer in the Microelectronics Technologies Department, you will lead the design and development of Digital Hardware used in high performance products that are critical to the defense of our nation, such as use in various ground, airborne, missile, and space applications. This position is an Onsite role located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Successful candidates should expect to be immersed in a fast-paced, team-based, and challenging technical environment where an individual with talent and initiative can stand out and thrive.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and perform circuit card design lifecycle activities including requirements capture, schematic capture, design documentation, signal integrity analysis, creation of board stackup and routing instructions, coordination and review of printed wiring board layout, creation of test plans, root cause analysis, and integration. Designs will include the use of FPGA, processors, and DDR memory components, and industry interfaces, such as Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART.

  • Serve as a hands-on technical authority and apply advanced technical principles to design and optimize complex electrical systems, including high-speed digital circuit designs that can overcome the complex challenges of signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) to ensure reliable performance.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, firmware, and mechanical engineers, to develop proven hardware designs that meet system performance and operational specifications.

  • Test and troubleshoot electronic circuitry. Includes support lab of design verification testing for circuit card assemblies.

  • Perform trade studies as needed and select components necessary to implement the requirements. Includes supporting system architecture discussions where needed.

  • Mentor others in personal technical growth and may lead small teams to success with schedule, budget, and technical execution.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued secret security clearance is required.

  • Experience acting as a hardware technical lead on Digital circuit card developments (including hardware designs with processors, FPGAs, memory, and industry standard interfaces).

  • Experience with all aspects of circuit card design from concept through delivery to higher level assemblies as evidenced by successful design completion.

  • Experience with schematic capture of electrical circuit designs. Includes familiarity with a schematic capture tool (examples may include Mentor Graphics xDxDesigner and/or Xpedition, Altium, Cadence Allegro, EAGLE, KiCAD, etc.) for creation of circuit card designs.

  • Hands-on experience testing circuit card assemblies and performing design verification activities.

  • Signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) experience with ability to perform pre- and post-layout simulations and analysis to ensure reliable signal transmission and power delivery for high-speed interfaces like PCIe, DDR, and high-speed Ethernet.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with Agile for Hardware Development, including planning, tracking, and managing hardware development projects in JIRA is a plus.

  • Familiar with the latest technology and trends in the area of high-speed digital design, as well as microprocessor, memory, FPGA and interface protocols.

  • Experience with signal integrity and timing analyses for creation of robust circuit card designs.
