Wood Mackenzie is looking for a dynamic, detail oriented and experienced data analyst to work as a Principal Analyst in our Product Analytics team. The team provides data on customer usage of our products which is fundamental to ongoing product development and commercial negotiations with our customers. We are looking for an analyst with excellent data management skills as well as problem solving, team management and communication skills. We are a global data analytics company developing advanced platforms for data analysis and visualization, helping our clients make billion-dollar decisions.

Role Purpose:

This role sits within the Woodmac Product team, reporting to the VP of Product Analytics. The successful candidate will be leader and subject matter expert, responsible for evolving our practices and closely supporting Product Owners and Senior Stakeholders with the analysis of customer usage data to support decision making. The role will lead on ensuring we get commercial advantage from our product analytics applications and that we maintain 24/7 coverage of how customers are using our products.

About the Responsibilities of the Role:

The role of Principal Analyst, Product Analytics fulfils the following needs:

Architecture & Technical Implementation

  • Ensure our key analytics application, Amplitude, is instrumented across our range of products to produce reliable, valid data and is working as expected

  • Continually review the set up of Amplitude for Wood Mackenzie to ensure this is optimal for current product offerings and is efficient use of Amplitude resources

  • Co-ordinate with data architects and engineers to build new, efficient, and effective data processes using current and future data platform tooling and frameworks. 

  • Understand and contribute to the development of the wider product analytics technical and data architecture within the company.

  • Lead the development of processes to streamline product analytics

  • Utilise AI where appropriate to enhance the capture, reporting and distribution of usage analytics

  • Represent the company within technical forums and vendor interactions as required.

Strategic Analytics Leadership:

  • Develop a deep understanding of Wood Mackenzie’s products and how to successfully represent analytics on customer usage by critically evaluating what is tracked and how this is reported.

  • Develop expert working knowledge in how to maximise commercial benefit from existing analytics applications with specific focus on Amplitude and relevant extracted data into PowerBI and other applications used by Customer Success and Sales

  • Proactively foster knowledge sharing across the product community and lead on standardisation of methodology for how usage analytics are reported.

Commercial Impact & Decision Support:

  • Work with the Product teams to draw insights from product usage data

  • Proactively provide reliable usage data to inform product prioritisation decisions made by Product colleagues and senior stakeholders.

  • Ensure valid usage data is being used by Customer Success teams to prioritise customer retention activities and measurably improve attrition rates

Team Leadership:

Ensure the most effective use of collective team resource.

  • Develop each team member as a data analyst and SME in product usage and analytics.

  • Deliver against the backlog of work that is required to deliver this product related data within an agile framework working alongside the other product, data, and technology owners.

  • Identify issues and manage resolution in a proactive and positive manner

  • Inform stakeholders by consistently communicating progress, requirements, and challenges against priority timelines. 

  • Manage the product analytics team’s knowledge base and help evolve the team’s documentation on good practices, while building easy-to-access knowledge repositories and improvement guides

Knowledge & experience:

  • Proven analytical capabilities. Highly proficient in manipulating large sets of data, building data models and visualising data.

  • Proven quality assurance skills to ensure what is presented to stakeholders is accurate.

  • Experienced team leader and manager of small team including day-day management and ongoing development of team members

  • Preferred knowledge of Amplitude and PowerBI or similar analytics applications

  • Preferred knowledge of SQL, Python, DAX.

  • Deep understanding of modern data architecture, including cloud platforms, data lakes, and real-time analytics.

  • Preferred knowledge of how to work with Engineering teams to instrument and ingest usage data reliably.

  • Preferred knowledge of how to quality assure that data pipelines and queries by dependent applications are implemented accurately.

  • Ability to take complex, disparate data points and distil them into simple, provocative concepts.

  • Willingness to take a stand on competing priorities and feasibility of delivery.

  • Familiarity with Agile working including estimation and prioritisation of backlog items.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and industry partners.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a constant desire to innovate. A deep intellectual curiosity about the required data to inform our portfolio strategy and product prioritisation.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Excellent working knowledge of emerging data analytics trends including methods of working and applications.

  • A strong record of academic achievement or equivalent experience. Software engineering or data engineering background is a plus.

Success Metrics:

  • Decision Quality: Leadership decisions are better informed, timelier, and grounded in clear operational insight.

  • Visibility: Executives have a consistent, trusted view of customer usage on a monthly or as required basis.

  • Alignment: Reduced friction and rework downstream of Amplitude caused by unclear usage data.

  • Leadership Leverage: Increased time and focus for the CPTO leadership team on strategic, external, and transformational priorities rather than reviewing and reworking the detail of usage analytics.

  • Organizational Confidence: Leaders and teams report greater clarity and trust in how decisions based on usage data are made and communicated.
