Team Description

This role is for a Principal Cloud Engineer within the Compute & Cloud Services Engineering (CCSE) organization. CCSE is responsible for designing, building, and operating software solutions that support HPE server hardware. We manage a portfolio of system management products that are delivered either as SaaS offerings or licensed directly to customers. CCSE operates within the Compute business unit, which focuses on the sales and support of HPE server hardware.

CCSE consists of several specialized teams. This position is part of the Platform & Infrastructure Engineering (PIE) team, which is responsible for:

  • Managing and optimizing our AWS infrastructure for our COM Product.

  • Building and supporting the HPE COM Secure Gateway product

  • Developing and maintaining automation for infrastructure and software deployments

Job Description

The Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior-level role designed for an experienced engineer who thrives working independently across a broad range of technologies. This individual will be responsible for building production-grade software, designing and operating scalable cloud infrastructure, and owning the end-to-end deployment lifecycle from code commit to production release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage AWS infrastructure across multiple accounts using infrastructure-as-code and automation best practices.

  • Collaborate with a global engineering team to develop, enhance, and support the HPE COM Secure Gateway product, a customer facing virtual appliance.

  • Modernize and optimize mature build and deployment systems to improve speed, reliability, and overall engineering efficiency.

  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and security across cloud environments and delivery pipelines.

About our products

HPE sells a lot of server hardware.  We build software to help our customers manage that hardware.  Our Compute Ops Management (COM) SaaS product helps admins get their hardware up-and-running quickly while keeping them patched and uniformly configured.

Our COM Secure Gateway product compliments COM and gives customers a more secure way to connect their servers to COM.

Finally, OneView is our mature system management application that is licensed to customers for use in their datacenters.  It provides a self-hosted solution to system management and can be used in combination with COM.

Required Skills

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities, with a demonstrated ability to diagnose complex technical issues and deliver effective solutions.

  • Proficiency in Python and Go, with hands-on experience building production quality applications and automation.

  • Deep expertise in AWS, including EKS, EC2, VPC networking, IAM, S3, RDS (PostgreSQL), MSK, OpenSearch, Redis, Vault and CloudFront.

  • Proven experience building, deploying, and operating containerized applications in cloud-native environments.

  • Solid understanding of Kubernetes, including cluster administration, operations, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.

  • Experience designing, developing, and integrating RESTful/HTTP-based APIs.

  • Strong background in deploying, monitoring, and automating AWS infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Proficiency with Git and modern source control workflows in collaborative development environments.

Nice-to-have Skills

  • Experience with infrastructure and DevOps tooling such as Terraform, GitHub Actions, Packer, Istio, and ArgoCD.

  • Hands on experience deploying and operating Kubernetes on bare-metal environments (non-EKS), including cluster setup and lifecycle management.

  • Familiarity with bare metal server hardware, including provisioning, configuration, and troubleshooting.

  • Solid understanding of core networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, load balancing, and firewalls.

  • Experience administering, tuning, optimizing, and troubleshooting PostgreSQL databases in production environments.

  • Working knowledge of Java application development concepts, build systems, and runtime behavior.

  • Experience implementing and operating monitoring and observability solutions, such as Prometheus and Grafana, for health, performance, and capacity management.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively navigate organizational complexity and collaborate across teams within large enterprise environments.

Education and Experience Required

  • Typically 7-15 years experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or closely related quantitative discipline, or comparable work experience
