The Opportunity:

The Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to participate in both state government work and work within communities in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Region 10 (Alaska (AK), Idaho (ID), Oregon (OR), Washington (WA)).

As a Prevention Fellow for Human Development, you will be hired and managed by Washington State University (WSU), while your daily duties will be co-managed in conjunction with Region 10 supervisors (who may be affiliated with state governments, community organizations, universities, or other prevention organizations).

During Phase 1 (4 months*), you will work with the Northwest PTTC team to learn about the PTTC network for workforce development. This phase will help you understand the mission and approach of state-level and regional prevention systems.

As needs are identified, you will transition into Phase 2, which lasts about 3 months* and take place in a Region 10 state (WA/ID/AK/OR). In this phase, you will focus on how prevention science is applied at the state and community level, learning about applying evidence-based approaches. Phase 2 usually takes place within a state-level or local agency working in the field of prevention.

In Phase 3 (approximately 3 months*), you will serve as a mentee under a current prevention coalition coordinator or other prevention leader, learning the day-to-day operations of a substance misuse coalition.

Throughout the fellowship, you will support prevention providers, Northwest PTTC staff, and Region 10 state and local staff on contracts, statewide, and/or local prevention projects. Your work will include developing formal education programs, providing technical assistance to communities promoting wellness through substance use disorder prevention and mental health promotion, and disseminating information about evidence-based prevention programs supported by prevention science research. You will collaboration with WSU and University of Washington (UW) researchers, Region 10 state and local prevention agencies, and community members. Additionally, you will receive coaching to preparing for the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) exam.

* The length of the phases may be modified depending on the hiring timeline and need of placements.

This is a full-time (100% FTE), temporary position. This position is overtime eligible.


Temporary End Date:

This is a temporary position expected to end September 18, 2026. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.


Monthly Salary: $3,750.85 - $5,397.56 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications


In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. human development; psychology; social work; public health; sociology; etc.) and two (2) years of related experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience, including internships, may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. 

  • Ability to travel and work a flexible schedule during the week .

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  •  Excellent organizational and project management skills 

  • Ability to travel statewide and within Region 10 (AK/OR/ID/WA) as needed. 

  • Ability to work flexible work hours. 

  • Proficient in MS Office products including Word, Outlook, and Excel.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skills and/or experience in providing training to culturally diverse audiences on prevention and health promotion topics.

  • Experience working with racial/ethnic and other historically minoritized communities. 

  • Experience in contract management, communications, and social marketing practices.  

  • Experience working or interning at a state, county or local level government agency.   

  • Ability to design effective work processes to fulfill program/community goals and objectives.

  • Ability to find and interpret research related to community coalition building and substance use prevention.       

  • Ability to find community-level data and present data clearly to community members.

  • Ability to help community members identify and interpret data and train them to use data to conduct their own needs assessments.
