Job Summary: About the Position: This position is located within Tripler Army Medical Center in the Directorate of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

Major Duties:

  • Obtain information from patient, family, and guardians to identify reason for seeking health care.
  • Perform behavioral health screening and take patient vital signs.
  • Document patients' chief complaints and other pertinent information in the health record.
  • Facilitate care coordination utilizing nursing assessment to communicate relevant information according to the medical plan of care.
  • Prepare assigned rooms for scheduled patients.
  • Provide individualized nursing care to patients of all ages.
  • Assist the physician with various examinations and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assist in lifting and repositioning patients who need help.
  • Administer prescribed medications and immunizations through various routes.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens according to local standard operating procedures.
  • Recognize adverse signs and symptoms immediately and call for assistance.
  • Screen immunization records and unit Standard Operating Procedures to select required immunizations, correct dosages, and routes of administration.
  • Educate patients, family regarding self-care procedures and post-care reactions.
  • Coordinate with designated clinic administrative staff for maintenance of adequate vaccines and supply levels.
  • Review laboratory results and bring abnormal results to the attention of the physician.

Basic Requirement for Practical Nurse: Licensure: A current license to practice as a practical or vocational nurse in a State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia; OR must have applied for a license to practice. Applications of candidates possessing a license must be accompanied by a certified or photostatic copy of the license, a notarized statement attesting to the fact, or a citation of the license number and State issuing it. Non-licensed candidates who have completed their training may be appointed subject to obtaining the required license during the probationary period. Those not licensed must furnish the date on which they applied for a license and the jurisdiction involved. No person appointed pending licensure may be retained beyond the probationary period if licensure has not been attained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirement listed below: Experience: One year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures, performing such duties as providing individualized nursing care; administering prescribed medications through various routes; measuring patients vital signs or updating patient medical records. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
