This position will provide technical supports to, and work directly with the PI on all aspects of the planed sweet potato genomics research and breeding to help meet the quality, quantity, and timeline targets for the project deliverables. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to, experiment planning, lab bench works such as extractions of extra-long genomic DNA extraction and RNA, Ion-torrent Next-Generation and Nanopore Third-Generation sequencing, and genotyping by sequencing and dqPCR, bioinformatics data analyses, and greenhouse and field works for preparations of sweet potato experimental materials and for breeding selections. The position will also involve lab management and supervision of students. Additionally, the successful candidate must be willing and able to work flexible schedules, weekends during peak periods of field research works when needed.
This position is funded by restricted funds or a grant. Continued employment is contingent upon the renewal of restricted or grant funds.
The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.
Responsibilities:
Lab bench works, including sweet potato tissue culture, extractions of extra-long genomic DNA extraction and RNA, Ion-torrent Next-Generation and Nanopore Third-Generation sequencing, and genotyping by sequencing and dqPCR, bioinformatics data analyses, and other molecular biology and genomics bench works.
Greenhouse and field work, including maintenance of sweet potato stock plants in greenhouse, germinating sweet potato hybrid seeds, sprouting seed sweet potatoes for planting slips, filed preparation and transplanting, field crop maintenance, field selections and data acquisitions, and preparation of seed sweet potatoes.
Research Data analyses.
Lab management and student supervision; performs other duties as assigned. Participates in college wide events.
Required Education and Experience:
Doctoral degree in plant molecular biology, or in plant physiology other related plant science areas with molecular biology training and experience.
No prior experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and training in areas of plant molecular biology, plant tissue culture and plant genomics, demonstrated proficiency in working with basic bioinformatic tools including various DNA analysis software programs.
Preferred Experience:
1+ years of experience in molecular biology bench works, plant tissue culture, and in related greenhouse and field works.
Experience in Next-Generation or Third-Generation Sequencing and genotyping by sequencing is highly desirable.
Experience with database management and scripting is a plus.
