Postdoctoral Researcher - Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy

BASIC FUNCTION:

Lead and support basic research experiments utilizing any aspects of the TIGRESS and GRIFFIN spectrometers at ISAC. Collaborate in experiments performed by the Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy at ISAC group (GRSI). Lead the effort for the simulation, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the fleet of HPGe clover detectors, the ancillary detector systems and digital data acquisition system of TIGRESS.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and participate directly in research with TIGRESS, GRIFFIN and the other devices operated under the GRSI project grant;
  • Disseminate results as articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and at national and international conferences and workshops;
  • Simulate, construct, install, integrate, and commission new components associated with  TIGRESS;
  • Assist in developing, operating, monitoring, and maintaining the GRIFFIN and TIGRESS digital data acquisition system hardware and software component parts;
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Participate in experiments at ISAC and ISAC-II;
  • Prepare reports and documentation for review panels;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support the GRSI project grant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The successful candidate will provide supervision for graduate and undergraduate students
 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Advanced knowledge of contemporary nuclear structure;
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with radiation detection and measurement, and operation of radiation detectors;
  • Advanced knowledge and skill with in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy and operation of associated systems;
  • Intermediate level skill with scientific computing and data analysis using C++ and ROOT;
  • Basic knowledge of digital data acquisition

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Completed (within 5 years) Ph.D. degree or nearing completion (successful oral defense of thesis), in nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, or nuclear science

Salary Information: $65,000 - 76,000
