The CERA team at Louisiana State University (LSU) seeks a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to support and advance the real-time storm surge prediction and visualization system, and to contribute to the integration of AI and data science methods into coastal forecasting workflows.
The successful candidate will support the CERA storm surge system. In this context, the candidate will run hurricane storm surge simulations using ADCIRC+SWAN on high-performance computing environments in real-time and for research purposes, analyze the performance of algorithms, and design and implement visualization tools for flood guidance.
In addition, the candidate will work closely with the AI team. In this context, the candidate will develop and maintain data science frameworks that support better flood level forecasting, apply these AI frameworks to the CERA workflow and interface, write and disseminate research results, and help with writing and preparing research proposals for the solicitation of funding.
Job Responsibilities:
Real-time storm surge forecasting: Support the CERA team during the hurricane season to provide real-time storm surge visualizations to stakeholders. Run model simulations for research purposes. (30%)
AI and data science integration: Design, implement, and evaluate AI and data-driven frameworks for improved flood-level forecasting, bias correction, and uncertainty quantification. Collaborate with the CERA AI team to integrate these models within the operational CERA platform. (30%)
Research and collaboration: Identify, engage, and work with application communities, both on and off the LSU campus, on the development and deployment of application frameworks. Assist in management of other CCT projects. (30%)
Other duties assigned. (10%)
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Extensive experience in hurricane research and flood modeling. Running ADCIRC simulations on high-performance systems is a plus. Experience or strong interest in flood visualization techniques. Background in AI/ML model development, including large language models (LLMs), time-series forecasting, or data assimilation. Strong communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
