Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Demography

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to an Australian Research Council funded project within the Queensland Centre for Population Research, School of the Environment. The role will support the development of a new population projection model to examine the short and long-term impacts of migration policy on Australia’s population size and distribution, labour force composition and housing demand. You will join a collaborative and energetic research team of demographers and economists, working closely with government and international partners to deliver policy-relevant research outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Research: Contribute to the development of a micro-simulation population projection model; work with census, survey and administrative data including complex longitudinal datasets; apply best practice quantitative and statistical methodologies; publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals; collaborate with academic colleagues, postgraduate students, government agencies and international partners; and present research outcomes at national and international conferences.
• Teaching: Prepare and deliver lectures; develop new workshop material using innovative and inclusive teaching methods; engage and support student learning through consultation and feedback; and incorporate research-led teaching practices (approximately 10% of your time).
• Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students; share expertise and support researcher development activities; and work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances in accordance with University policy and procedures.
• Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate citizenship behaviours aligned with UQ values; participate collaboratively in Centre, School and University activities; and begin to develop external partnerships with government, industry and the wider community relevant to the project.

About You

• Completion or near completion of a PhD in Demography, Geography, Economics, Quantitative Sociology or a related discipline
• A strong interest in migration research and migration policy
• Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills
• Programming experience in R and/or Stata
• Experience working with large-scale administrative datasets such as PLIDA or similar
• Knowledge of population projections and/or micro-simulation techniques
• An emerging research profile evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Strong communication and time-management skills
