Job Description:

The Department of Physics at Rhodes College invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral position in observations of AGN and feedback with JWST. The successful applicant will work on two Cycle 4 spectroscopic programs—one using MIRI/LRS and the other using NIRSpec—to observe AGN at Cosmic Noon and “restarted” radio galaxies. The ideal candidate would have experience modeling near- and/or mid-infrared spectra of galaxies, particularly with JWST. The research is in collaboration with scientists at the University of Heidelberg and may involve travel to and from Germany. This position is especially suited to candidates interested in undergraduate teaching, as the postdoc will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate researchers and teach up to two courses per year in physics and/or astronomy.

The starting salary for this position is $61,000. The successful candidate will have access to funds for relocation, computing, and travel, and will be eligible for medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, and flexible savings accounts benefits as outlined here.

The intended start date is Fall 2026.  The appointment is initially for two years, with a renewal for a third year subject to performance and funding availability.  Applicants must have earned a PhD in physics, astronomy, or a related field at the time of appointment.

Also, you must include the following under Additional Documents: 4) a three-page research statement outlining past work and future plans.

Review of completed applications will begin April 6 and will continue until the position is filled. Letters of recommendation will only be solicited for short-listed applicants, at which time you will be prompted for the names and contact information for three (3) references. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews.
