Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their team.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support on several exciting projects in the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies (CAPS). In this role, you will quantify spatial patterns of toxic air pollutants using a mobile laboratory equipped with advanced mass spectrometers.  Other potential projects include leveraging satellite remote sensing data and ground sampling to quantify black carbon spatial patterns, and quantification of emissions from electric vehicle fires and other tasks that may be assigned to you.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conduct mobile sampling in two New Jersey cities, with the routes selected via community input
  • Reporting of pollutant spatial patterns to both the community members and the funders
  • Quantification of pollutant sources and their spatial distribution using factor analysis methods
  • Dissemination of research results through publications and conferences
  • Report data and results to our collaborators and the community members of the target cities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree required
  • Typical candidate will either be a new PhD graduate or will have completed one or more prior postdoctoral positions
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

  • Able to lift 25 pounds
  • Able to work with small hand tools
  • A valid driver’s license
  • This position will involve substantial fieldwork. The successful candidate will be willing to conduct field measurements for 3-4 weeks at a time
  • Ability to work independently towards specified tasks
