Roche

Postdoctoral Fellow, Research Oncology, Ashkenazi Lab

South San Francisco Full time

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech.

A Postdoctoral fellow position is available for a highly motivated and independent candidate to join the laboratory of Dr. Avi Ashkenazi in the Department of Research Oncology at Genentech. In broad terms the Ashkenazi lab is interested in the discovery of fundamental biological features of cancer cells that cause unique vulnerabilities to therapeutic intervention and in the development of innovative medicines that leverage such dependencies. More specifically, our lab is interested in understanding extrinsic apoptosis resistance mechanisms in cancer, as well as in the role of endoplasmic-reticulum stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR) in facilitating oncogenic transformation. Furthermore, we are interested in discovering novel therapeutic strategies to disrupt apoptosis resistance and/or UPR-mediated fitness in cancer cells.

The Opportunity:

  • You will have opportunities to conduct your own independent research to make original discoveries, productively collaborate with other researchers across departments, present your work internally and at external scientific conferences, and lead and drive scientific publications.

  • As a member of the Ashkenazi lab and the Research Oncology Department, you will work at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and therapeutic translation in the field of cancer

  • You will participate in Genentech’s post-doctoral training program, which provides an outstanding opportunity to pursue exciting basic-science questions in an environment focused on breakthrough discoveries and their translation into life-altering or life-saving medicines.

Who You Are:

  • A Ph.D. with a proven track record of excellence in investigating the biology of cancer

  • An independent thinker with integrity, strong passion for scientific discovery, outstanding communication skills, and methodological experience in biochemistry, cell biology, computational biology, and in vitro and in vivo cancer modeling.

  • Have advanced at least one key research project evident by a first-author paper accepted or published in a leading peer-reviewed journal.

  • Able to work both independently and as a team member.

Qualifications:

  • Theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in cancer-cell biology and computational biology.

  • Track record of successfully conducting laboratory experiments.

  • Ability to formulate scientific questions and hypotheses.

  • Ability to design, perform, and interpret experiments to test these hypotheses.

  • Ability to describe scientific findings, summarize them, and explain their significance.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
