JPL is seeking a postdoc to support the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) and High Contrast Imaging Testbed (HCIT) efforts. This position focuses on advancing high-contrast coronagraphy techniques for exoplanet detection and characterization.

The selected candidate will conduct independent research on the analysis and mitigation of instrumental effects in coronagraphic data, including the study of super-chromatic speckles and their influence on contrast performance and science yield. The work will involve a combination of experimental data analysis, instrumentation modeling, and post-processing development, contributing to improved performance of future space-based observatories.

This research is designed as a postdoc-level effort, emphasizing innovation, first-author publications, and the development of new approaches to high-contrast imaging challenges. The appointee will work closely with JPL scientists and engineers while contributing to broader HWO and HCIT team objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original research in high-contrast imaging and coronagraphy

  • Analyze and model coronagraphic testbed data to understand instrumental effects (e.g., speckle behavior)

  • Develop and apply post-processing techniques to improve contrast performance

  • Contribute to simulation and modeling of instrumentation and science data

  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across HWO and HCIT efforts

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Optical Engineering, or a related field

  • Strong background in exoplanet science and/or high-contrast imaging techniques

  • Experience with wavefront sensing and control and/or coronagraph instrumentation

  • Demonstrated experience in scientific data analysis and modeling

  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications

The appointee will carry out research in collaboration with JPL advisor, resulting in publications in the open literature.
