The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) Post-Graduate Administrative Residency role provides hands-on administrative experience and exposure to current challenges facing the healthcare industry today for graduates with a master's degree in healthcare administration or a related field.

The post-graduate administrative residency allows the resident to gain exposure within a specific department in a multi-disciplinary, complex healthcare organization through project-based work and partnership with operational leadership.

Through this experience, the post-graduate administrative resident will have an opportunity to collaborate with leaders and stakeholders to further develop leadership skills, participate in cross-functional learning, and build professional relationships across the organization.

Essential Job Statements

Performance Expectation: Strategic Initiatives
Based on the direction of the post-graduate resident’s preceptor, the post-graduate resident will lead strategic initiatives in assigned area(s) and will be actively involved in the planning and execution of those initiatives.

Plan and execute projects for assigned area(s) while gaining exposure to managerial and strategic challenges at that level.

Performance Expectation: Financial Management
Gain exposure to business planning, operational and capital budgeting through  Participation in operational and financial project-based work. Enhance understanding of how hospital leaders use financial data to make key decisions.

Performance Expectation: Relationship building/Leadership
Collaborate with participants from various areas to complete assigned projects.

Spend time in various areas to gain exposure to the various functions and services provided by different departments.

Develop administrative and leadership skills, such as fostering team cohesion, motivation of staff, effective interpersonal communication, problem solving, customer service/service excellence, and project management.

Performance Expectation: Miscellaneous Responsibilities
Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department.

Provides assistance and support to team members to promote effective collaboration and operational continuity.

Accepts alternate assignments, as required.

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree and completion of an accredited master's program in Health Care Administration or related field or must be within their final semester with degree completed within six months or hire.

Working Conditions: Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. Required car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. Long-distance or air travel as needed- not to exceed 10% travel. May have periods of constant interruptions.
