Job Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to conduct independent scientific research utilizing the model organism C. elegans that supports the goals of the Allen laboratory in the Department of Biology at Howard University.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: N/A
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This is a post-baccalaureate fellow position available to start January 2026 through August 2026 in the Allen lab at Howard University. The purpose is to conduct independent research in studying the genetic basis of reproduction using the nematode C. elegans as a model system.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Conduct independent research utilizing cutting-edge techniques in microscopy, molecular biology, and CRISPR-Cas9 endogenous genome editing (including but not limited to: fluorescent imaging, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning and microinjection experiments).
- Perform C. elegans genetics (husbandry, crosses, and freezing strains)
- Conduct data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation responsibilities as needed.
- Support ongoing experiments in the lab.
- Assist in basic lab duties such as media preparation and ordering supplies
- Participate in weekly group meetings and professional training.
- Coordinate and assure development of pertinent reports/data and their timely delivery.
- Participate in the development of manuscripts and reports, and conduct primary and secondary data analyses.
CORE COMPETENCIES:

- Competence in both oral and written English and ability to articulate concisely and in a professional manner.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented large and small ensemble environment
- Previous laboratory experience with molecular biology is preferred by not required
- Good basic computer skills
- A strong desire to learn how to do research
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or equivalent
